    2. Anyone have a web site for Daws-Guion-Miller role, where you can see names listed without having to buy? Yes, I'm 'frugal'...haha. Thanks. Diann

    3. Thanks to all who answered my cry for help in accessing the Goad Message Board. My problem was caused by neither gremlin nor incorrect URL - my husband has set our computer NOT to accept cookies and apparently Ancestry (or whoever) insists on placing one or more on your computer before letting you in. As much as I hate to, I suppose I will just have to forego the message board. Ann Causey

    3. Isn't that odd? I have tried this site on two different computers at two different locations, one using Win 95 and ISP Worldnet, the other using Win 98 and ISP Bellsouth - both end up displaying "The page cannot be displayed" (rather than "found"). Still doing it this morning. Is anyone else having this problem? Surely I am not being singled out by the computer goblins! 1. [GOAD-L] Re: Earlier queries on native/mixed-blood Goads
    2. Ken et. al.: Records likely indicate a high degree of surety, particularly if the early Goads you reference are from Virginia. The reason being no state was more active in pursuing the non-recording/registration of people of color. A wealth of records indicate that this same activist mentality against non-whites was preached to county clerks in the contiguous states as people of color emigrated from Virginia and its vast colonial holdings west of its current boundaries. For an individual to take a wife from a non-white background, a widower might adopt his former wife's Christian name for his new bride (this has occurred, and is clearly much more likely in a "frontier" environment in a closed-minded era), or a trader might have two families - one at his base (home), and one on his trade route. Many Virginia-based traders moved down the valleys into the present-day Carolinas, and contiguous present-day states. This was common among the earliest traders, and indeed if the individual i! n question wants more information regarding intermarriage, with native peoples in particular, they should seek out early trading families from South Carolina (to a great extent) and from Virginia (to a lesser extent). A good place to start this research is "South Carolina Indians, Indian Traders, and Other Ethnic Connections, Beginning in 1670". The authors are Theresa M. Hicks and Wes Taukchiray, the publisher The Reprint Company, Spartanburg, South Carolina. It contains no reference to Goads, or name variations of Goad, but a wealth of Anglo name references - for both native and white peoples - which are common to the eastern seaboard for this time period and/or common to those families intermarried with early Goads. An ancestor being from Virginia and having a white wife in the records, does not completely eliminate the possibility of native offspring, but it does make the documentation of said relationship more complex at best. This is an excellent reference, and ha! s helped many people who are serious about this type of connection. dp

    2. Ken: Doubtful it is the same man, but the following website will certainly confirm some sort of passion. A Robert Goad, Greene County, IN resident, was imprisoned May 1861, in the IN Southern (State) Prison for "assault with intent to kill" - then pardoned at the end of the Civil War. I am hoping to find data on this case when I am next in the area - I am intrigued by the fact that his prosecution and pardons mirror the start and near-end of the war. Look in: rootsweb.com/~ingreene/prison.htm. dp

    3. I tried this site. My pc sits and blinks for 30 seconds, then gives me the "Page cannot be found" message. (Trying to access a county "Query" page in GenWeb gives the same results) I don't know what "they" are trying to do, but whatever it is, I wish they wouldn't. I think this is another case of "new and improved" when it's neither. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" 2. In 1880, William H. and Mary R. Goad were living in Bosque County, TX with ten children. One child was Mary A., age 21, hence born ca 1859. The father of William wasa Alexander Goad of Madison County, Ark. whose father was James. Lots of data on the internet for Alex, --- Ken

    2. I was mistaken. Peter Goad did marry Elizabeth A. Hadden 11 June 1872 as his second wife. She was born 7 Mar 1850, the dau of Samuel and Nancy Hadden. They had 14 children. Peter and first wife Mary A, Woodall who he married 8 Apr 1864 had but one child, Mary. As Mary was born in 1870 and Peter re-married in 1872, it is likely Masry died having Mary or soon after. My big question -- Was Aaron and Littlebury sons of Ayers and Edith or were they nephews ? ---- Ken

    3. For anyone who wants to try the new boards, the Goad Message board is at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.goad&maxrows=25&dir=next It's taken them a bit of work but I think that the programmers have done a pretty good job at merging the boards from RootsWeb, Ancestry, and MyFamily. Take a look at the drop down menu for message types. This new message board has all of the capabilities of the old GenConnect boards and more. I'm not going to be available to answer questions about the boards. I have a business meeting at Three Mile Island next week and we are leaving early in the morning to do some tourist things on the way there. We'll be getting to see our grandson (and daughter and son-in-law) as well, as our son-in-law is stationed a couple of hours east of TMI. 2. Hi again, I am using a different name (Mike instead of Michael) and a different e-mail address to test the reply to a query without loging in using a password. The previous message worked and I am comfortable that this one will work also. Now just to see if these messages make it to the list. Mike

    2. Hi all, It is my understanding that programmers have set it up so that you do NOT need a password to post to the message boards. I am posting this message to the board and not using my e-mail for posting this to the list. This is a new message and not a reply to an old message. If this makes it through, we'll know that it works. Mike
