Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/kIZ.2ACEB/1098.2 Message Board Post: David -- I could be wrong about your chances being slim. Consider this. Robert Goad of Bedford County, Virginia (1740-1940s) moved to Maury County, Tn in ca 1893. With him came several sons and numerous grandchildren. One son was Robert, Jr. (1778-1860s). The oldest son of this Robert was Osborne born 1811. He and wife Judith Moore were probably the first Goad family in Texas (maybe second). He went first to Nacodoches, Couny,Tx in 1849 and then to Anderson County where he died in 1859. Among his sons was a James O. Goad. "O" is not a common middle initial and was probably for his father, Osborne . He was a blacksmith. He was age 12 on the 1850 Nacodoches census, age 12, hence born 1838.. In 1860 Anderson County, he is listed as age 24 but the censuses were often"off" a year or more.We then jump tp 1900 Clay County, Tx where a James O. Goad born in 1838 in Tenn. of a Va father (not correct) is listed. Next we have the record of the Joy, Tx cemetery in which are interred James O. Goad (1938-1901) and Mary C. Goad , his wife (1847-1934) James O. Goad married Mary C. Hunter 20 Mar 1866. . Interred there is a son Balboa who died as an infant If your James married Mae Cash in 1904, he was likely born ca 1880-1885. James O, Goad was about forty-five or so then and Mary was the late 30s so they could well be the parents of your James. Just possibly another generation could be between with a son born ca 1885 but that is pushing things. In the same Joy cemetery are Robert S. Cash (1854-1923) and wife Mary M. (1859-1925). A son is Andrew (1899-1902) , a daughter Effie (1891-1893) and a likely son Robert L. (1884-1949) with wife Maggie born 1886. Another Cash is Monroe (1870-1951) with a wife also named Maggie (1868-1938). I wrote a book on the Goads back yo the 1600s wich includes a chapter on the Maury County, Tenn. clan including Osborne's parents and siblibngs. --- Ken --- Ken
Some of my Goad's are from Texas but they orginally came from White Co AR. They lived in Central Texas around the McLennan,Coyrell Co areas then later moved to Wellington TX (Collingsworth Co). My great great father was Andrew Swick Goad and he married Alice Belle Coleman. I do not think the families are related but one never knows. I do know that Alice's family lived in Vernon TX. One of her brother's was a surveyor in that county. My grandfather, William A. Goad, moved to Mangum, Greer Co, OK about 1919 and became a mechanic. A few months later his parents and siblings came to live in Mangum. Mangum is located in the SW corner of Oklahoma. Wellington TX is within an hours drive of Mangum in the lower Texas panhandle. I also looked up Joy TX on the net. I found that it was a very small town. In 1914, there were on 23 people and in the 1930's, it grew to the number of 37 people. Here is the url that I found the information: http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/JJ/hlj13.html Do you know what sort of work the grandfather did? My great grandfather was a carpenter and we are trying to confirm that he worked for the railroad. Feel free to email me privatily. Linda Grennan Okla

No one can maintain files on that many. So usually you must work back a couple more generations to hook up with the Goads of early America. This can usually be done through ther Federal census records. First check the 1920 census for the county where your father was born. You likely will find the grandfather listed there, You need his name if you do not know it. Do you ?? Any idea WHERE in Tenn. they came from ?? Tennessee was the prime destination when many Goads left Virginia in ca 1800. By 1850, there were about fifty Goad families residing in Tenn. in about twenty-five different counties. After the Civil War (and even before) many spread west o Ark,Texas and Okla . Census records can be ordered on microfilm by any good-sized library. You could get lucky but the chances are slim without more information.. --- Ken

The Goads, Haywoods and Fitzgeralds were mixed up ca 1850-1880 and perhaps later. William J. Goad married Mathena Haywood in 1870. Maria was her sister. Robert Goad, Jr. married Cynthia Fitzgerald when he was a widower and quite elderly. Henry T. Hoad married Regina or Roena Goad in 1877. They had a son Albert in 1880. Roena was an apparent widow in 1900 living with Nellie B. Martin, likely a daughter., widow of John E. Martin (or dvorced) so here is a Nellie Goad. Roena might have been called "Rosie". You use nick-nasmes like Nellie and Rosie.Nellie was usually for Eleanor and Rosie could be for Roena above. (I think it was Roena instead of Regina). By 1900, the Goads in Maury had dwindled to a relative few compared to 1850-1860. In ca 1990, there were but three in the Columbia phone book which encompassed rural areas also. That's about all I have in my files. I can go back farher on Henry and Wlliam T. Goad if there is a connection but I do not research Haywoods as such./ --- Ken

Hi all, Since I mentioned this in a forum that would go to the list, I thought I should share it. James Wesley Goad married Olive Orabelle Wineland. Her father was John Wineland. When John decided he was too old to farm, he worked at the Livery stable in Bull City for a few years. In 1905 he retired and they moved into Osborne where they lived close to where the new courthouse was being built. Each day, John walked over to see the progress. The contractor told him to go home or he would carve his face in the stone. Wineland did not go home and the contractor kept his word. Many Wineland descendants pass through Osborne to see John's face on the south side of the courthouse. (The south side is the alley side and the carving is high up on the building). Mike

Our family has been in Nebraska since the early 1900s when my great-grandfather moved up from Kansas. Most of us have left for other locations (I am within 75 miles of some of my line settled in Arkansas back in the 1830s) but some, such as my Dad, a brother and a sister, have since moved back. Our line does go back to Abraham and Katherine of Richmond County, Virginia, though there is one "weakest" link in the connection of James M. Goad of Pttslvania/Bedford County, Virginia with his father, who many believe to have been Robert Goad of Maury County, Tennessee, son of John Goad of Bedford County, Virginia. James Isham Goad was the son of the deceased Robert P.
