    1. Re: [GLS] Cheltenham Engineer Volunteers
    2. Engineering companies in the US Army are the ones who build things as in building shelters, houses, bridges (all kinds), fences, grade land needed for buildings, dig trenches, ditches, dredge rivers, canals, trace and pave roads, putting up windows, building floors for camps, etc. They even plant trees when needed. They include carpenters, plumbers, roofers and many other skilled laborers. In my town they donated the labor to fix up an old building to serve as the club for the airborne troops. They fixed the windows, the roof, graded the parking lot, planted trees, built a deck in the back patio, dug holes with their digging machinery to bury enormous rocks that would have been very expensive to have removed by a contractor to make room for a parking lot. They did this in the hilly area of town where grading land for building is very expensive, so they are pretty handy guys to have around. Military engineers (engineering companies) really are building crews - read building almost anything - which use all the skills found in civilian life. Oh, they also learn to blow them up and build or rebuild what they blew up. I understand that the engineering companies are more or less the same in any army. Elvira
