    3. Help, please, or suggestions, on trying to find the marriage of this couple, probably around 1831 or 1832. With the assistance of census returns and parish records I have established with some certainty that John BAYLIS was baptized 10 Apr 1808 in Ashchurch, while Mary SPARROW was baptized 28 Oct 1804 in Maisemore. She was the first of nine children. She and one sister were baptized in Maisemore. One brother and another sister were baptized in Gloucester, all in the Church of England. The next 5 children were all baptized in the Independent church in Gloucester. The next I know of Mary is the baptism of her first known child on 11 Nov 1832 in the Independent Chapel in Cheltenham, and another similarly baptized on 25 Nov 1834. Their third known child is my direct ancestor Sarah Ann BAYLIS, born 10 Mar 1838. I have her birth certificate. Both she and three subsequent children were baptized in the Church of England.(one of them at age 9). I cannot find a marriage for this couple. I do have census entries for 1841 and 1851 which confirm the make-up of the family, despite the apparent changes in religious affiliation. Any suggestions on how to find a marriage for them would be appreciated. I have already looked in the obvious places (Ashchurch, Maisemore, Gloucester and Cheltenham) but without success. I suppose it is possible they did not get married at all since non-Conformists were not allowed to perform their own marriages at that time. However, as a family that clearly thought seriously about religion, enough to change their affiliation, I feel confident there would be a marriage ceremony somewhere to avoid the taint of adultery/fornication/illegitimacy. 3. Hello Tim I noticed your BAYLIS and RODWAY. I don't think I can help but it might possibly be of interest to you that my wifes family ancestors include both BAYLIS' ( sometimes spelt BAYLISS and pre-1800 BAILEY/BAILY) and RODWAYs ( aka RADWAYs). Thomas BAYLIS b 1840 S Cerney married (1865 Cirencester ) Elizabeth RODWAY b 1842 Somerford Keynes. Thomas BAYLISb 1840 was son of Rachel BAYLIS dau of Job BAILEY and Ann CARTER ( b 1791? S Cerney ) who were married in 1808 in S Cerney. Later some of these BAYLIS' lived in Wales and Bristol. Elizabeth RODWAY b 1842 was dau of Thomas RADWAY b 1817 Somerford Keynes and Ann BEAMES b 1820 Kemble ( married 1838 Kemble). Thomas RADWAY b 1817 was ? son of Richard RADWAY. Some of this is not yet fully proven - I am working on it. Does not seem to tie in with your family but I would obviously be interested if you think there might be links. I would be interested to know if you have connections to this area with your Baylis families.
