    3. I am trying to find the ancestors of Emily Hay CRIDLAND. Emily was born in Jamaica (British Subject) about 1868. In the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses she lived in the Ashley area of Bristol. Her mother Emily (maiden unknown) is also in Bristol. Emily Hay CRIDLAND married Claude Alfred Gay between Oct - Dec 1888. Her mother is shown as wife in 1881 and 1891 but widow in 1901. I have found no record of her father. Emily (the mother) is shown as having been born in Pucklechurch, Gloucestershire about 1829 and her death appears to be recorded on FreeBMD between Oct - Dec 1905. The Handbook of Jamaica 1891 - 1892 shows the sugar estates in cultivation in Jamaica. There is an entry for Westmoreland "Roaring River, Heirs of Admiral Hay (Thomas Cridland)". No other information but the surnames raised my interest. There is a marriage between a Thomas CRIDLAND and an Emily LIGHT on FreeBMD recorded at Clifton between Jan - Mar 1862. I have not found Thomas and Emily in the 1871 census (the Old Cleeve, Somerset family do not fit). Does anybody have any knowledge of this family in their research, please? I am trying to identify whether they are one and the same family or a coincidence of facts. 3. Geoff, According to the 1881 census, Emily Hay's brother Richard was born c1863 at Stream, Somerset. On FreeBMD there is a birth registration for a Richard CRIDLAND in the March qtr 1863 at Williton reg district, vol 5c, page 405. According to Genuki, Williton reg district covers Sampford Brett which is very close to Stream. If you send for Richard's birth certificate, it should give you Emily snr's maiden name plus his father's name which would then enable you to prove whether the marriage of Thomas & Emily you have found is the correct one. Good luck. Hi Geoff, I haven't heard whether you took up my suggestion of looking for the baptism of an Emily in 1829 in the Bristol Baptism Index 1813-37 CD or whether someone else has done it for you. As there has been no follow-up on list concerning her baptism, here is a likely match: Emily FOTHERGILL, daughter of Christopher and Mary Ann, was baptized on 25th. January 1829 at Pucklechurch. Abode was Leeds, Yorks and father's occupation was printer. Richard FOTHERGILL, her brother, was baptized on the same day at the same church. Emily FOTHERGILL was married to Isaac LIGHT before her marriage to Thomas CRIDLAND. The marriage of Emily FOTHERGILL and Isaac LIGHT was registered in Keynsham in the September quarter of 1846. At the time of the 1851 census, the LIGHTs were living in Victoria Street, St. Philip & St. Jacob, Bristol. Gordon Beavington's transcription shows Isaac LIGHT, 49, an accountant, born Shortwood, Emily LIGHT, 22, born Shortwood, Jno, 3 born Penzance. Shortwood is between Mangotsfield and Pucklechurch in Gloucestershire. (The area is now termed South Gloucestershire.) In 1851, Emily's widowed mother, Mary Ann FOTHERGILL, was living at Stapleton Road, St. Philip & St. Jacob. She was aged 53. Her occupation was a school mistress and she was born in Pucklechurch. Her married son Richard, 25, and his wife, Maria, 22, and child, 9-month-old Eliza were also in the household. Richard was a printer and compositor, born in Leeds, while Maria was born in Stapleton and Eliza in Bristol St. Philip. It looks like Mary Ann FOTHERGILL had been a widow for some years as Christopher FOTHERGILL of Bristol, aged 38, was buried on 15th. January 1835 at Pucklechurch. Previously a child, Christopher FOTHERGILL, aged 5 +, had been buried on 8th. March 1829 at Pucklechurch. It looks like he was Christopher, the son of Christopher and Mary Ann FOTHERGILL, who was baptized on 18th. August 1823 at Pucklechurch. Abode was Pucklechurch and father's occupation was printer. These parents also had a daughter, Mary Ann FOTHERGILL who was baptized on 3rd. April 1831 at Pucklechurch. Then, the abode was Stapleton and father's occupation was printer. Another FOTHERGILL burial at Pucklechurch was Hannah FOTHERGILL, 68, of Nitham Mills, who was buried on 5th. July 1814. I think that would have been Netham Mill near the St. George area of Bristol where there were other FOTHERGILL families. In fact, Emily's brother, Richard FOTHERGILL, 54, a compositor born in Leeds, was in the 1881 Bristol St. George census at 3 Belmont Terrace, Stapleton Road, with his family. Hope this FOTHERGILL and LIGHT information is of interest. Please let me know what you think.
