    3. Hi Listers, Emailing you from the snowy hills of Pa, USA! As we get this Northeaster snow storm, I'm settling in to ask if anyone else is in search for anyone who might have been in my ancestor's downline? Brother's family, sisters, etc. Hoping to get some lead on my great grandfather and or his family. This is what I have so far. Edgar Smith, (s/o Silvanus Smith ,Emma Bick) born abt:1858/60, (Gloucester,1860c),died,abt:1948/51, Stroud, married/maybe not? spouse: Elizabeth Swan, born abt:1875-1880, died:? daughter: Caroline Smith,born,abt:1905, Gloucestershire, died: 2000, Swindon, Wiltshire son: Frederick Smith, born,abt:1912,died:? Prior Rd. Gloucestershire 1861 Census: Gloucester:122 Westgate Street: Silvanus Smith, age:32, Emma (Bick),wife:30 MaryJane dau: 3 Edgar, son, 2 George, son: 3 mons Frank Huncombe, servant,17 Elizabeth Rose, servant, 15 I think this is mine, its hard to tell, but because my grandmother, (Caroline) told me she was born on Westgate St. it does make sense! Is there anyone online who belongs to George, or Mary Jane? I have not been able to find any marriage registration for Edgar Smith and Elizabeth Swan. although they are both named as parents to Frederick Smith from St. Nicholas, Gloucester in 1912, either they didn't register or they didn't marry, or how do I find my Gran's birth certificate without spending a fortune on the wrong ones.???? lol Esther Fetkso Thank in Advance. 3. Esther, I have searched the GRO Index for you (via Ancestry) for the birth of a Caroline SMITH in Gloucestershire between 1904 and 1908. There are only 2 birth registrations in Gloucs during that period both in 1908. One is for a Caroline SMITH registered in March 1908 at Bristol reg district, vol 6a, page 25 and the other, which seems more likely, is that of a Caroline Dorothy SMITH registered at Gloucester in the June qtr 1908, vol 6a, page 338 (I'm pretty sure it is an 8 although the type is rather smudged). There is also a marriage registration at Gloucester in June 1908 of an Edgar James SMITH, vol 6a page 653 although there is no corresponding entry for an Elizabeth SWAN. Have you considered that either, or both, of them could have been married before? Your Edgar seems pretty elusive in the census records. I have found the 1861 entry, could find no entry in the 1871 but did find this one in the 1881 census in Gloucester St Michael on RG11/2536, folio 65, page 6 (it stood out to me because the next entry down is No 1 Bicks House!): Schedule 31, 61 Barton St Edgar SMITH Head Mar 22 Glass and China Merchant Gloucestershire Gloucester Annie do Wife Mar 19 do do There is a death registration of an Annie SMITH in March qtr 1890 at Gloucester reg district, vol 6a, page 241, aged 27 which would tie in quite well with the above census record. I can't find Edgar in either the 1891 (he is not at 61 Barton St, I checked - although there are BICKs at the Crown & Thistle Inn, Barton St) nor in the 1901 census. Sorry not to have been of more help. 3. Thank you so much Janet, There are so many things that don't add up with this line of mine. Mysterious bunch, I must say, lol See I have been going around in circles for years. My grandmother, Caroline Smith, Platt who gosh, I loved so much. Told us she was left by her mother as a toddler and her mother took her older brother, right? her father, Edgar Smith was the one who raised her. However, in turn, it turns out Gran, Caroline Smith is the older child and seven years later Frederick was born. Now wouldn't one think she did know her mother and brother? Then she told us she was born on 121 Lower Westgate Street. Gloucester. Of course from the states here not knowing to much later that the house numbers of that Lower Westgate run much lower. It was then I found Edgar as a child on 22. Surprise. So unless, went to live with his folks when Caroline was born or she just interpreted that to be her birth place or through the years as on 21 or 22 as ONE 21 or 22 I don't know. Gran died in 2000, So I wasn't able to verify if this was something deliberate or not. My mom one of Caroline's daughters, didn't think her grandfather Edgar Smith was married before when I brought it to her attention not too long ago. But again according to calculations he was an older man when Gran came along and therefore it could be quite possible he was married before. you said he was elusive. Very much the loner according to mom. The family doesn't call themselves this, but they did travel a lot and during the was worked at various farms much like the "Travelers" Gypsies. Could he had served in part of the service? Jail at those times he is not available in the census's? There is a lapse of time when he put Gran into a convent that he was absent. The same could be possible I would imagine. We don't even know where he's buried. In those days before readily available phones and the like and communication was by post/mail or travel.Gran went to see her dad on a visit and had learned he past away. Since he lived alone, and of course she wasn't notified at the time we are pretty sure he was placed in a paulpers field somewhere and all I know somewhere in Stroud. Thanks so much for your time. I'm so confused about this mysterious family lines between the Smith's and Swans. I so wish the the 1911 census was available in the UK now as our 1910 have been for years. I would be able to detect who gran was living with at that time and make out the truth. When I had checked the free BMD there was no indication of a marriage between the two as I could find. However, there's didn't go that far and I learned there not all indexed. Frederick shows up with mom's name as Swan. Why wouldn't Caroline's? What I'm starting to get a feeling is that maybe she was stolen? Does UK have historical societies and would anyone have newspspaper clippings of missing kids from back then? The only other option would be gran knew and is covering up a story she's trying to hide from us and has only given us half baked stories? If only I could get he birth certificate. I just don't have the means to pay for one if its incorrect and no way to know if it is the right one if she really is by different parents, so how would I know the difference? Delimia, huh? Caroline Smith, Platt, May 17, 1905,died: September 4,2000 I do think she lied about her age though, somewhere along the line .
