Bonds were sworn statements containing assurances by a couple's friends or relatives that they knew of no impediment to a marriage, confirming that the couple would marry in a specified church, and also stating the money by which they were bound and which would be forfeited if the licence was not complied with. (Herber, Ancestral Trails). The need for such bonds was abolished in 1823. David Steel
