Not sure how relevant this is to the thread, but - When it comes to marriages in England before mid 1837, these could only be legally solemnised in the established Church of England. The only exceptions that I am aware of were if you were a Quaker or of the Jewish faith, who were allowed to conduct their own ceremonies.
