Hello Listers, I recently found out that three of my husband's ancestors were transported to Australia in the 1830s after being convicted in the Gloucester Assizes or Quarter Sessions. My query is this - are these court records available and if so how do I go about getting copies of them? In all three cases I know the dates of departure for Australia, the names of the ships they were transported on, and where each was convicted but not exactly when they were convicted. I hope some lister can point me in the right direction. Cheers Dallas - Australia
Dallas I do have access to the index of some of the Gloucester Criminal Records. If you have names I can check and see if they are on them. I believe that the records are held in Gloucester Record Office. Hi Dallas, If you go to the Gloucester Records offices website http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/genealogy/Search.aspx Enter your names and years, then just tick gaol, you can probably find them. I found two of mine, convicted at Gloucester, that way. You can get further details for a price, £4.50, I think. Hi Dallas I have one ancestor transported in 1837 after his conviction at the Assizes in Gloucester. The original court records are at the National Archives in Kew. I went there about 18 months ago and found the indictments and other documents - such as the recognizances for witnesses. I was able to get the indictments scanned as they were too large to photograph. Check the catalogue to find the reference. I believe the Quarter Sessions records are at the Gloucestershire Records Office.
