Hi Janet I found your SMITH family in 1861 living in Manchester Lancashire. Solomon is a Victualler and Seymour is a Butcher. In 1871, Seymour was living in Salford Lancashire with a family called BOOTH. Emily BOOTH is described as Sister and the children as his nieces and nephews. Seymour's occupation is still Butcher. In 1881, Seymour is now married to Emma and they have two children. His niece Emily A. BOOTH is still living with him. He is still a butcher. In 1891 Seymour is now widowed and is living with his two children, Arthur B. and Lavinia E. SMITH. His niece Emily A. BOOTH is still living with the family. Occupation is now Cattle Dealer. Still living in Salford. In 1901 Seymour is now married to Sarah. Occupation is Retired Butcher. Now living in Blackpool. I also found John H. with wife Ellen and son William H living in Salford in 1871. Let me know if you would like further details on John and family. I will send images off list. He was the schoolmaster of Horsley School at a time towards the middle of the nineteenth century. I believe that he was born nearby, Kings Stanley or Stonehouse. He married Elizabeth HESKINS, who became his assistant at the school. Solomon was one of the census takers in Horsley for the 1851 census [I think]. His children included Seymour SMITH, an unusual name. I cannot find any mention of Solomon or Seymour SMITH beyond 1851 so wonder if the family emigrated. Elizabeth HESKINS had an illegitimate daughter, Jane, who was brought up by her grandparents to believe that they were her actual parents. [The father was George HUMPHRIES] Jane married in London and I have not tried as yet to follow her line. Any sightings of Solomon et.al would be most helpful.
