I have a postcard from a bike shop asking the customer to "come and collect the repaired bike this afternoon". This was in the 1890s. Senders were obviously quite confident that letters posted in the morning would be delivered the same day. At a time when we have to pay a hefty premium to guarantee next day delivery, it demonstrates how much better the service was then. In those days Slough was not very big. ( not like it is today, I live here) Also I believe, it went to the Post office, and someone from the house would go to see if there was any mail for the House, and of cause they knew everyone local. Not like Today, were neighbour's don't know one another, you also may have to wait a week for a letter. Sheila.
