    1. [GLS] Where to find APPRENTICES / CHURCH

    3. Good Day, I wonder if anyone on this list is researching the family of Luke CHURCH b.1738 and Ann JEYNES? Their son, James Luke CHURCH, came to South Africa in 1820. I would like to know in what field he served his apprenticeship. His father, Luke, had been a rope manufacturer, but he died in 1801 when James was about 8 years, so he did not necessarily go into that trade. In Luke's Will, he is leaving money to his oldest son, Charles CHURCH, to pay for an apprenticeship of James. At what age would he have started to serve an apprenticeship? On his S.African death notice, his occupation is given as Mariner. How could I find when and where and as what he served his apprenticeship? I would also like to find apprenticeship information for Henry CHURCH, also from Gloucester, Glos., who was a ropemaker. I should imagine that this person could have served in about 1800. Thank you, Dorothy Mowlam, Port Elizabeth, South Africa

    3. Hi Dorothy 'A Calendar of the Registers of the Freemen of Gloucester 1641-1838' has: 1818 Jun 19 Jas. Luke Church, mariner, son of Luke, flaxdresser, decd. And 1775 Jan 16 Luke Church (Appr. Of Ric. Evans) flaxdresser by fine. 1799 Aug 14 Chas. Church, ropemaker, son of Luke, ropemaker 1806 Aug 22 Edw. Church, attorney, son of Luke, flaxdresser, decd. Apprenticeships usually began around the age of 14 years and lasted 7 years but this was not always the case. Hope this helps. 3. Thank you, Elizabeth, for your response. Could I ask you, though, to please check the date you have for Luke CHURCH (Appr. of Ric.Evans) - my Luke would have been 37 years in 1775. I find the Ric. Evans an interesting connection - the wife of Luke CHURCH, Ann JEYNES was the daughter of (William) JEYNES and Marth EVANS, a sister of a Richard EVANS (although according to his Will (1780) he was an ironmonger - I wonder if this Ric. could possibly have been his father. Thanks again, Dorothy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elizabeth Jack" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, September 06, 2008 9:18 AM Subject: Re: [GLS] Where to find APPRENTICES / CHURCH > Hi Dorothy > > 'A Calendar of the Registers of the Freemen of Gloucester 1641-1838' > has: > > 1818 Jun 19 Jas.
