Horatio Nelson SMITH born 1799 at Iron Acton, Gloucestershire, was the ancestor of Thomas James SMITH who founded the pharmaceutical company Smith & Nephew that has grown to be an international conglomerate. The Nephew in the company was also a Horatio Nelson SMITH who managed the company after the death of his uncle in 1896. Smith & Nephew started business in Hull, Lincolnshire, growing quickly when it imported cod liver oil from Denmark.
