Hi Carolyn Thankyou so much for looking for me. I agree about the Bisley ones and will keep them on file. Regards Celia
Hi Celia I have had a look at the possibility of other siblings linked to the birth's for John SMART born 1809 or 1810 in Bisley to see if their are any possible connections, that link with your John SMART, at first I looked at the 1809 one with the father Thomas and identified several children whose father was Thomas: William 1792, Elizabeth 1794, James 1795, Obadiah 1797, Joel 1799, Jane 1800, Maria 1803, Jane 1803, Mary Anne 1804, Daniel 1805, Elizabeth 1806, Lot 1807 and John 1809 though obviously these could belong to one or mother fathers named Thomas I selected several of the male children and found nothing linking your John SMART with this particular line and so turned my attention to the possible siblings with the fathers name of William, all of which are listed again as before under the same batch: Moses 1786 died 1787, John 1792, Robert 1794, Anne 1797, Maria 1799, Francis 1801, William 1805, Hannah 1804, Ann 1804, Charles 1808, James 1809, John 1810 and George 1812 all baptised Bisley. I selected two men William and Charles SMART and the following may well be of interest to you: WILLIAM SMART - Christening: 25 DEC 1805 Bisley, Gloucester CHARLES SMART - Christening: 27 MAR 1808 Bisley, Gloucester First William SMART: 1841 Census: Bisley, Gloucestershire Wm Smart abt 1806 Gloucestershire, Waterman Charlotte Smart abt 1811 Gloucestershire James Smart abt 1840 Gloucestershire Source: HO107; Piece 349; Folio: 4; Page: 2 William SMART's wife's maiden name is GARDINER: 1851 Census: Marlhill, Bisley, Gloucestershire (Ecclesiastical parish: Chalford) William Smart 1806 Bisley, Gloucestershire, Head, Waterman Charlott Smart 1809 Bisley, Gloucestershire, Wife James Smart 1840 Bisley, Gloucestershire, Son, Assistant to his father Fredrick Smart 1843 Bisley, Gloucestershire, Son Elizabeth Smart 1845 Bisley, Gloucestershire, Daughter Jesse Smart 1847 Bisley, Gloucestershire, Son Elizabeth Gardiner 1821 Bisley, Gloucestershire, Sister-in-Law, Works on a Farm Source: HO107; Piece: 1964; Folio: 375; Page: 10 1861 Census: Marl Hill, Bisley, Gloucestershire Charlotte Smart 1809 Bisley, Gloucestershire, Head, W, Cloth Weaver James Smart 1840 Bisley, Gloucestershire, Son, Waterman Elizabeth Smart 1845 Bisley, Gloucestershire, Daughter, Silk Worker Jesse Smart 1847 Bisley, Gloucestershire, Son, Silk Worker Source: RG9; Piece: 1773; Folio: 86; Page: 13 This appears to be the marriage for William SMART and Charlotte and fits with their children's birth registers too: WILLIAM SMART Spouse: CHARLOTT GARDNER (GARDINER) Marriage: 30 DEC 1838 Bisley, Gloucester Source Information: Batch Number: 8609430 Sheet: 88 Source Call No.: 1396182 Type: Film from Gloucester BMD: SMART William & GARDNER Charlotte at Stroud Bisley All Saints year: 1838 C4/1 47 SMART James SMART SMART GARDINER 1839 Stroud Stroud, Bisley 1 328 SMART Frederick SMART SMART GARDINER 1843 Stroud Stroud, Bisley 2 348 SMART Elizabeth SMART SMART GARDINER 1845 Stroud Stroud, Bisley 3 167 SMART Jesse SMART SMART GARDINER 1847 Stroud Stroud, Bisley 4 25 I suspect details of the above marriage would confirm who William' s father is and his possible occupation. ========= Now Charles SMART: 1841 Census: Bisley, Gloucestershire Charles Smart abt 1806 Gloucestershire, Waterman Maria Smart abt 1816 Gloucestershire Ann Smart abt 1833 Gloucestershire Elizabeth Smart abt 1832 Gloucestershire Herna (Henry) Smart abt 1837 Gloucestershire Rich Smart abt 1839 Gloucestershire Ellen Smart abt 1840 Gloucestershire Source: HO107; Piece 349; Folio: 4; Page: 2 Charles SMART's wife's maiden name is WYATT 1851 Census: Bisley, Gloucestershire (Ecclesiastical parish: Chalford) Charles Smart 1811 Chalford, Gloucestershire, Head, Waterman Maria Smart 1811 Chalford, Gloucestershire, Wife Elizabeth Smart 1835 Chalford, Gloucestershire, Daughter, Silk Worker Ellen Smart 1841 Chalford, Gloucestershire, Daughter, Silk Worker Mary Smart 1843 Chalford, Gloucestershire, Daughter, Scholar George Smart 1845 Chalford, Gloucestershire, Son, Scholar William Smart 1850 Chalford, Gloucestershire, Son Source: HO107; Piece: 1964; Folio: 425; Page: 4 1861 Census: Bisley, Gloucestershire Mariah Smart 1814 Oxford, Oxfordshire, Head, Wid Mary Smart 1843 Bisley, Gloucestershire, Daughter William Smart 1850 Bisley, Gloucestershire, Son Elizabeth Ewer 1851 Lechlade, Gloucestershire, Boarder Source: RG9; Piece: 1773; Folio: 113; Page: 12 ==== I am unsure whether this is the correct William SMART though he is old enough to have fathered all the above children, though it is his occupation that I feel does not fit with that of sons as Watermen, anyway this William SMART is a clothier in 1841 and in 1851 he is listed as being a Clothier employing a total of 107 persons: 1841 Census: Chalford, Bisley, Gloucestershire William Smart abt 1776 Gloucestershire, Clothier Marria Smart abt 1791 Gloucestershire Source: HO107; Piece 349; Folio: 42; Page: 15 1851 Census: Bisley, Gloucestershire William Smart 1768 Bisley, Gloucestershire, Head, Clothier employing 32 men, 64 W, 4 Boys, 7 Girls Total 107 Maria Smart 1788 Stroud, Gloucestershire, Wife Ann Townsend 1789 Bisley, Gloucestershire, Servant Source: HO107; Piece: 1964; Folio: 416; Page: 16 Hope you may find these of some use.
