I'm sure this happened all of the time.  Here in the USA, people that worked the Railroads would have families at both ends of the line; not common but still happened.  I know this for fact because my Grandfather was one of them.  The routes were long and the layovers were long and nature took its course.  Railroaders were well paid and able to support two families.
