    1. [GLS] Ryalls Farm, Slimbridge
    2. Pat Hanby
    3. I'm trying to find out who was living at Ryalls Farm Slimbridge around 1880-1890. My grandmother Annie Elizabeth Morgan (born 1875) lived with her family at Cambridge Villa on the Bristol Road, in both 1881 and 1891 censuses (the family were also there in 1871) However she used to talk about Ryalls Farm as though she lived there, or at least stayed there frequently. She told us how she would climb out of a bedroom window and down a tree by the house. She also did a tapestry picture of the farmhouse, which my cousin now has. Her father, Francis Henry Morgan, was a timber merchant, and I wondered whether his timber yard could have been at (or near) Ryalls Farm rather than where they actually lived. I should imagine even then the A38 would be a busy road and a business like his was more likely to be off the main road. It must have been quite big - in an 1876 directory he is "timber merchand and steam saw mill proprietor", and he employed 15 men and 4 boys in 1881. In 1891 ! he is a timber merchant and farmer, and he died in 1892. I've not found Ryalls Farm in the census for 1881 or 1891. Pat Hanby Reading, UK

The Family History Library Catalog only lists Miserden records up to 1812. The IGI has christenings for Elizabeth and Mary Ann Nichols in Miserden on 15 February 1846. The father is listed as James Nichols, the mother as Hannah. It is an entry that was submitted by a patron. Is the name of the mother correctly transcribed? What was the residence and the occupation of the father? The names of the girls seem to match with the names in a census record for 2 females who are listed on the Gloucester Birth Index as children of Sarah Ludlow, which is a part of my family. Elizabeth was a female in the March 1840 quarter, and Mary Ann was a female in the September 1844 quarter. The James Nichols who married Sarah Ludlow was christened in Miserden in 1811. I have the birth certificate of a younger sibling, Ellen Nichols who was born in Gloucester, where the family lived in 1851: Births Mar 1852 Nichols Ellen Gloster 6a 233 Birth in the subdistrict of St John the Baptist, in the City and County of Gloucester. No 28. When and where born: 1 Feb 1852. 77 Barton Street Name: Ellen Father's name: James Nichols Mother's name: Sarah Nichols, formerly Ludlow. Occupation of father: Labourer. Informant: X the mark of Sarah Nichols, mother, 77 Barton Street, Gloucester. Registered: 23 Feb 1852. Registrar: John Oakley Baker, Registrar. There was a James Nichols who married Hannah Morgan 10 April 1842 in Churchdown. That James Nichols was a tailor and his father was James Nichols, Soap Boiler, (deceased). On the Gloucester Birth Index, there seem to be 2 children of this couple, Sarah Ann in 1842, in Stroud Dursley, Wotton-under-Edge and Margaret in 1843, in Gloucester Gloucester, South Hamlet Any help in solving this would be appreciated. 2. Hugh Kearsey
    3. Carolyn, The Gloucestershire BMD index > Gloucestershire BMD Index 1837 to 2005: > http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd/ shows two children born in the Cirencester district with the father NICHOLLS and the mother LUDLOW. Both children are unnamed, but the ages fit the 1851 census. Elizabeth was with her parents at Brimsfield in the 1841 census with siblings Samuel aged 7 and John aged 5. Brimsfield was in the Cirencester Registration District, so that checks. I can't help with the baptisms of Elizabeth and Mary Ann, but Samuel and John were both baptised at the same time at Miserden in 1835. So all baptisms were late, and I suspect Elizabeth and Mary Ann were registered born as unnamed because they had not been baptised. Many believed children were not named properly until they had been baptised. As they were living in Brimpsfield when Elizabeth and Mary Ann were born, they probably wanted their children to be baptised in Miserden and so that had to wait until they were able to get there. Hugh
