    3. Hi Listers, I know this is going to be a long stretch, but here goes. Is there a way to find where my great grandfather, Edgar Smith was buried in Stroud? I'm not sure of the statistics as my grandmother, his daughter only found out about his death probably a few years after his died. My grandmother, Caroline nee Smith, Platt went to visit him at one point and found out he had passed away. My mom tends to think he was at an old age pensioners home at the time prior to his death and probably was buried at a paupers cemetery. How would I go about finding out from this side of the pond? Esther Edgar Smith, born abt;858/60,died:abt:1948/52, Stroud Parents: Silvanus Smith, Emma Bick, Gloucestershire Spouse: Elizabeth Swan Children: Caroline, born abt:1905, Gloucestershire, died:2000, Wiltshire Frederick Smith, abt:1912,died:? Is there a way to find out how many there was back at that time and if they kept records On Jan 8, 2007, at 6:08 AM, Margery Whitham wrote: > Anne - I appreciate your help and certainly will be applying for the > Certificates. > > Very many thanks, > Margery > > > > > - Original Message ----- > From: "Anne Peat" <anne.peat@bigwindows.demon.co.uk> > To: <gloucester@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Sunday, December 31, 2006 5:50 PM > Subject: Re: [GLS] MEADOWS and LLEWELLYNS of Stroud and Gloucester > > > Sorry, Can't find Henry Fitzroy meadows on the 1901 census with parents > Lucy Alice's birth is on Free BMD > Births Sep 1904 > > MEADOWS > Lucy Alice > > Gloucester > 6a > 348 > > as is Henry Fitzroy's > > Births Sep 1898 > MEADOWS > Henry Fitz Roy > > Gloucester > 6a > 299 > Getting one birth certificate would give you parents - and both would > confirm the realtionship. > Sorry not to help more > Anne > On 31 Dec 2006, at 12:30, Margery Whitham wrote: > >> I am trying to piece together the above families. >> >> In particular I would like to find a Henry LLEWELLYN born Stroud >> c.1862. 3. Hi Jeremy So far, I have the BLENKARN/BLINKHORNE family back to Derby in the 17th century. In 1700 a Henry Blinkhorn went to Ashby de la Zouch and my family descended from there but I do have one missing baptism so don't have a complete line yet. My sister and I were the first two BLINKHORNEs to be born in Gloucestershire, my parents having come from Kent, and before there, Dudley. I assume the family originated centuries ago in the hamlet of Blencarn in Cumbria but haven't made any links back there yet. 3. Hello Joan, When you search for St John the Baptist Church, Gloucester just be careful that you get the church in Gloucester itself and not one of the others in other parts of Gloucestershire. This site looks helpful http://www.glosgen.co.uk/gloucester/gloster2.htm St. John's Church, Northgate St., on the corner of St. John's lane. A church is reputed to have existed on this site from 931. The church was rebuilt in the 11th century and dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The foundation stone for the present church was laid 1 June 1732, and the first service performed in 1734. The new church incorporated a 14th century tower and steeple from the old church. The spire was removed in 1910, and now resides in St. Lucy's garden, just around the corner from the church. The church was renamed St. Johns Northgate in 1972 when the congregation entered into a sharing agreement with Northgate Methodist Chapel. Registers 1558-1974 lodged with GRO. Perhaps someone with more local knowledge can help with a photograph? Hi Ally, Thanks for your response. I don't have any details of baptisms for the children of William and Esther BROOKS after 1836, but did find one for Giles whom you haven't listed. For every baptism father's occupation was Sawyer. Baptisms at the church of St. Philip & St. Jacob, Bristol: Giles was baptized on 13th. August 1826 at the age of two weeks. Abode was St. Paul. Benjamin was baptized on 14th. October 1827 at the age of three weeks. Abode was St. Paul. Esther was baptized on 30th. November 1828. Abode was St. Paul. Baptisms at the church of St. James, Bristol: Henry was baptized on 8th. April 1832. Abode was St. James. Mary was baptized on 9th. March 1834. Abode was St. James. William was baptized on 14th. February 1836. Abode was St. James. These baptisms are included on the Bristol Diocese Baptismal Registers Vols 1 to 7 Index and Transcripts 1813-1837, which is available on CD from Bristol & Avon Family History Society. www.bafhs.org.uk When I get a picture of the church of St. James on my web page of Bristol churches, I'll let you know. I do have an old print of it, but haven't got around to scanning it yet.
