Thank you, Hugh, for pointing me to the Rodborough site. Although I was told the chapel was no longer in use this may not be true but no doubt with the help of all you helpful folk we shall find the one I am seeking. It may turn out to be Rodborough after all. Thank you, Jules, and I'm sorry I was so vague with my request. I believe, that as you leave Stroud you pass a hospital on the way to the chapel/church. I understand the graveyard is quite overgrown but there is a family plot of the LLEWELLYNS of Stroud within and as some of the family were married in the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Stroud, I assumed it was a chapel rather than a church because from what I was told the building had a steeple which rather complicates my request because I thought Chapels didn't have steeples! Do hope I have helped rather than hindered!! I would go with the old meaning, i.e. a commercial traveller. Not all Les have gypsy connections, though it is a common name in that community. But commercial traveller would fit better with subsequent employment. I am trying to fill out my family tree a little more and working on the family of Henry Hale Davis from Slimbridge. >From the 1871 census of Gloucestershire Henry Davis, age 52, Head, born in Eastington, occupation Edge Tool Maker Ann Davis, age 75, Mother, born in L. Stanley, occupation not given Caroline Davis, age 37, Wife, born in Cam, occupation Dressmaker Laura A. Davis, age 3, Daughter, born in Slimbridge, occupation not given I have followed the family through the census and have concluded the following: 1) Henry's full name was Henry Hale Davis, found in Census of 1851. 2) Ann Davis (Henry's mother) died I believe Mar 1880. From the Free BMD, there are two entries for an Ann Davis who died during this time frame and the death was recorded in the District of Dursley. Slimbridge was in Dursley's recording district. 3) Caroline was I believe Caroline Bailey. From the Free BMD, the only Caroline listed on the same page as Henry Davis was Caroline Bailey, married Sep 1866. 4) Henry's death was about Mar 1898. From the Free BMD, there was a Henry Hale Davis who's death was recorded Mar 1898 in the District of Dursley. 5) Caroline was still alive at the time of the 1901 census. Living with Caroline during the 1901 census was Ronald H. Smith who is listed as "grandson". 6) I believe Laura A. Davis married Albert Henry Smith. From the Free BMD, there is a Laura Annie Davis listed on the same page as an Albert Henry Smith, married reporting quarter of Sep 1893 in District of Gloucester. 7) From the 1901 Census of Gloucestershire, I find the following: Albert H. Smith, age 31, Head, Carpenter...family was living in Slimbridge Laura A. Smith, age 32, Wife Dorothy M. Smith, age 3, Daughter Charles W. Smith, age 1, Son Remembering that Ronald H. Smith was living with Caroline Davis, this would make the number of children Laura children at 3 during the time of the 1901 census. Is there anyone else out there working on this family? If so, I would like to hear from you. Thanks, James Davis
Hello Geoff, The person in question could have been a commercial traveller at the time in question. In my current research in to manufacturing families it was the custom to take samples of the products to potential purchasers. This is in connection with both the woollen industry and brewing. The traveller in 1841 would travel by horse power but the railways were now coming in. I don't know for sure but this could well mean a change in the employment of a 'traveller'. Worth considering..... Cheers, Janet Heskins

Sorry, The message about Betty Mills was intended for Hugh Kearsey....... I didn't look at the address to which I was posting. Janet Heskins
Hi Hugh, Please do you have an e-mail and postal address for Betty? I was in Nailsworth just after New Year at Somerfields and asked someone who was driving the Crystal Fountain Village minibus if Betty was still there. i was told that she was. I am working on various letters relating to the FLINT family. It was Betty who deposited them at Gloucester Archives so I would like to let her know what is takiong place. The letters are most interesting and are the basis of my MA dissertation. Very Best wishes, Janet
Margery, Seems like it could be Rodborough Tabernacle. But it is still in use as a URC church. It has a burial ground, but it is totally overgrown with brambles. See: _http://www.digitalstroud.co.uk/landmarks.php?pageid=430&topid=6&pid=327_ (http://www.digitalstroud.co.uk/landmarks.php?pageid=430&topid=6&pid=327) There are smaller chapels, but I don't know of any with burial grounds. The above site could be helpful. Hugh
