Jackie, I had a second marriage of an Edward Payne. On his death certifcate his second wife was an Ann Nichols. Couldn't find a marriage record then I came across an Ann Nichols who married a Bell. It ended up that she was widowed then married Edward under her married name Bell. Is it possible Elizabeth Annis was married before she married Thomas and their marriage is under her first married name. Just a long shot. Regards Debby in Australia -----Original Message----- From: gloucester-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:gloucester-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Truffles46@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, 27 February 2007 9:09 AM To: gloucester@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GLS] Elizabeth Annis Thanks to Ian and Maureen who replied to my request. Firstly Maureen no i do not know fathers name indeed that is what i need to discover. Ian many thanks for the igi listing but i have gone round in circles trying to confirm a number of possibles without success. I was hopeing someone had this lady in their tree. What i do know from census is that Thomas Bick c 1824 Barnwood Glos married an Elizabeth also listed as c1824 Glos. My gt grandfathers birth cert quotes Elizabeth Annis as mother. I have the details of decendants for Thomas but nothing certain for Elizabeth. I cannot even find the marriage of the couple. Their first child Charles was born 1848 so i searched the marriage index for a few years before. Found a Thomas for the first quarter of 1848 but could not find a match for Elizabeth. This lady is so elusive. In 1836 William Henry Childe Hughes was born at Rutland House which I believe was in St George st, Cheltenham, on or near the corner of Swindon rd ( I am talking from Australia so hope I have this right!). In 1838 his father William Henry Childe died at this house - he was a teacher. Can anyone give me some clues please, about two things - 1. Was Rutland House privately owned and does anyone know how I can track it down? 2. William Henry Childe Hughes supposedly married Mary Anne Ball, daughter of Benjamin, in about 1826 at St leonards - but I can't find it on the IGI - would anyone have any ideas about where I could ftry to find such a marriage please? Hi agian Listers Does anyone know if there are any old photos of GLoucester available online apart from those on the Old Gloucester site which are really wonderful I might add. I am looking for pics of old St Aldgate St around no 24 if possible and also Berkley St both in the city of Gloucester. thanks Patsy
Hi Listers Has anyone copies of Directories for GLoucester city please? Already found the 1831 online. Need to find the following if possible. Charles WHEELER carpenter George WHEELER a druggist James WHEELER Engraver/carpenter Richard WHEELER John WHEELER whitesmith The above were brothers all born c1798-1807. George / James and John were Freemen of the City as was their father Charles (a carpenter) I know that George was living at 24 St Aldgate St in 1851 census and James was in Berkley St was wondering if that was where his business was? So rather hoping that a directory of the time - 1830/40's would say. John was in London by 1831 when he married. many thanks from downunder Patsy

Jenny IN 1841 There is a John URSELL age 75 with presumably wife but could be daughter/daughter in law, Charlotte age 50 at 8 Commercial Rd, Cheltenham (St Mary's) This John is listed as a Mason. There are no other URSELLs in the house. The other possible John is 65 yrs (transcript says 45 but i think it reads 65) and wife Hannah 67. he is a labourer address Coach Road (Soho Place) Cheltenham (Cheltenham Union). Again no other URSELLs in the house. Sorry this does not seem to get you very far. Perhaps someone could try for these pairs in 51 census and get some more details on their relationships. Hi Gillian, From the Historical Gazetteer of Cheltenham available online at http://www.cheltgaz.ukpc.net/ a search for Rutland came up with the following [Rutland house is near to the end of the entry!]: Rutland Street, St Paul's. Now part of Brunswick Street. Artisan housing, the first major development in what was to become the St Paul's area, built 1806 by Robert Cox (Blake & Beacham, p. 70). Became a notoriously crowded slum area, stated in 1871 to have no fewer than 7 courts running off it, varying from 18-35 yds long, 4-23 ft wide, poorly paved and drained (Streets and Highways Committee, 29 Aug.). Nos. 1-3 listed in 1934 slum clearance programme no. 1 (Housing Committee, Jan.). Perhaps to shake off an unwanted reputation, 37 residents signed a `memorial' the next year asking for a renaming to Brunswick Street South, which the council agreed to (General Purposes and Watch Committee, Apr. 1935). The South seems not to have stuck for long. Almost certainly named after Rutland Lodge (on 1806 map), a substantial house on a site equating to north end of St George's Street, facing DIY store car-park. The same house seems at various times also to have been known as Rutland Cottage (thus by 1818: Chronicle, Dec., described as 8-bedroom house), and Rutland House (Ruff, 1806). See also Sussex Street. Jackie Just in case you had not picked this up already ; a Thomas Bick was married in Gloucester in Q1 1848. On the same BMD page ( Vol 11 P 351) are two Elizabeths so either could have been his bride - Elizabeth Garforth and Elizabeth Wagstaff.
