    3. H again Keith, I just found them in 1871 as BUBB. Here Frederick is called Bubb. It is normal for this to happen with a stepson--to sometimes have the stepfather's name on one census and his own on another. 3. Hello Jenny Thank you very much for all your help. I am pretty sure that the people listed in the 1851 census below are the right family but wanted confirmation from the baptism records. I couldn't find Joseph on that census but he is back with Ann and children for censuses from 1861 through to 1901. Unfortunately, that is the only census that John appears in with his family. I did try to get a copy of John's birth certificate through the GRO references but could not read entries on the fiche. I sent away for brother William's certificate which does show him to be a son of Joseph HEWIN(G)S and Ann DENLEY who married at Hailes in 1843 and confirms ideas I already had. I am 99% sure that John is his brother but wanted to make certain. Thanks again Jenny. I am often doing research in Norfolk and sometimes in Suffolk so if there is any research you would like done in either county, please let me know. 3. Hi Cheryl, I'm probably stating the obvious but have you been able to find a marriage for John HAWKER, if so it would mention his fathers name. I found him in the 1851 census but not the 1861 or 1871. In district 8 for Welford I did not find any mention of a family by the name of Hawker for the 1841 census. A district 9 also comes under Welford but I haven't as yet checked it. I was working on the assumption of a transcription error. They end up in Bedminster, but she was born/baptized in Wick and Abson. I think it will likely be a Somerset listing. One of her children was Isaac, born circa 1803 - 1807. He died Jan - Mar 1850 reg Bedminster XI 51. She is a widow living with her widowed daughter-in-law in the 1851 Census. Thanks for any help that anyone can provide. Marilyn (Canada)

    3. Hi Cheryl I think that there is a high possibity that your John HAWKER was in fact born a totally different name... I have been looking at the fmily and as yet cannot work out where the HAWKER name comes from but what I have found appears to tie up with the family. First I looked for any other HAWKER's born in Welford around the same year that John HAWKER was born and I found a Thomas HAWKER born 1836, I then looked for John HAWKER in 1861 because when I found him in 1881 it appeared that he had previously been married, when I found the family in 1861 this was the entry: 1861 Census: Pools Close, Welford On Avon Gloucestershire John Fourt Hawkes 1834 Welford On Avon, Gloucestershire, Head, Ag Lab Eliza Fourt Hawkes 1834 Stratford On Avon, Warwickshire, Wife Elizabeth Fourt Hawkes 1859 Welford On Avon, Gloucestershire, Daughter Joseph Houghton 1811 Bidford, Warwickshire, Lodger, widow, Ag Lab Civil parish: Welford On Avon County/Island: Gloucestershire Registration district: Stratford On Avon Sub-registration district: Old Stratford Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 2231; Folio: 36; Page: 2 I then searched for a marriage for John and Eliza and found this: Surname First name(s) District Vol Page Marriages Dec 1854 Fort John Hawker Stratford 6d 835 West Eliza Stratford On Avon 6d 835 I looked in 1851 but found nothing of the family but I then found them in 1841: 1841 Census: Village of Welford, Gloucestershire John Fort abt 1806 Gloucestershire Hannah Fort abt 1806 born out of County John Fort abt 1834 Gloucestershire Thomas Fort abt 1836 Gloucestershire Elizabeth Fort abt 1841 (2 weeks) Gloucestershire Richard Boyce abt 1811 born out of County Civil parish: Welford Hundred: Deerhurst (Upper Division) County/Island: Gloucestershire Source information: HO107/354/33 Registration district: Stratford on Avon Sub-registration district: Old Stratford Folio: 7 Page: 10 Not quite sure from the census image if Richard BOYCE sould be included in this household. I then searched again and evetually found the the family in 1851 census: Transcribed FORREST but if you look closely enough you will see it is FOURT 1851 Census: Welford Gloucestershire John H Forrest 1810 Knorth, Worcestershire, Head, Ag Lab Hannah Forrest 1803 Kemsey, Worcestershire, Wife Jane Forrest 1842 Welford, Gloucestershire, Daughter Ann Forrest 1848 Welford, Gloucestershire, Daughter *Elizabeth Forrest 1832 Charringworth, Gloucestershire, Lodger Civil parish: Welford County/Island: Gloucestershire Registration district: Stratford On Avon Sub-registration district: Kineton Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 2074; Folio: ; Page: 1 * and amazingly the Elizabeth FORREST 1832 Lodger is in fact Charles COX a Pit Sawyer; can only think the person transcribing and typing must have gone bleary eyed. And perhaps the 'H' in John H FOURT represents the HAWKER!
