There will be many County societies and associations there as well as Gloucester Archives and a large display of photographs by Gloucestershire Police Archives. Details of directions and further information can be found on the GFHS website: http://www.gfhs.org.uk/index.html All welcome Kevin George
It has been a while since I have been on. Having lost my mother 2 weeks ago, it does tend to focus ones mind on things that one should get on and do. But in this instance it is for someone else rather than my own direct research. Apologies for the wide range of dates, rather a gunshot approach I am afraid as this is day one of what will I guess will be a long search. I am trying assisting my cousin, a Roger SADLER whose father a Hugh Owen SADLER was born around 1910. Hugh was apparently the result of a liaison between an office clerk and the bosses son somewhere in Wales, town of birth and parents names currently unknown. The use of Owen as a middle name may be a slight clue, but a difficult one to follow. He was adopted by a family in Eastington called SADLER who apparently were well established bakers in the village. They did have a son of their own called Harold. A quick search on the 1901 census does show a Harold SADLER aged 2 living in Eastington. I will be looking at the 1901 Census properly later, and trying to track back via other on line Census's but any other suggestions / information would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards John Sage Gloucestershire (Researching SAGE & PRATT 18th / 19th C. Gloucestershire, MORGAN & JEWELL in Somerset and SPINK & EDWARDS in Warwickshire!!)

The best way to find first world war records is to start with the medal records. These are relatively complete and are available on line. With this you should be able to establish the service number and in what part of the war the person served. With this information, you then have to shift your research effort to a visit to the national archives in Kew or the local military museum / archives of what ever force your ancestor served in. Don't forget that many of the first world war records were hit by a bomb in the 2nd world war and therefore lost. As a result of this, so that the War Office could continue paying the pensions, they reconstructed the pension records, and these also provide a relatively complete record of those who served. And as noted above, the medal records survived complete. As a starting point, I suggest that you try this link: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/medals.asp Wishing you every success in your researches Giles Colchester, Researching COLCHESTER family, any spelling, any time, any place And PACKARD in Suffolk Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2007 11:44:01 +0100 From: "David Watkins" <davewatkins@rockhouse186.fsnet.co.uk> Subject: [GLS] 1st World War Service records To: <GLOUCESTER-L@rootsweb.com> A couple of months ago a web site was posted here which showed where the service records of soldiers who served in the First World war could be accessed. Thank you for your reply Michael. Unfortunately, whose law is it?, I want a gentleman with the lovely name of Enos Orpheus Durnell. So I shall have to wait a bit longer. David, can you get back any further than that.1841 census. I'll tell you where I've been to get info that isn't census, so you don't waste your time. I've got the IGI Bastin/Baston's, 1881, 1901, and some online census for all around like Cam, Uley, Dusely ( usually beginning 1851)etc., but the township of Berkeley is never there. I don't have any CD's of census or parish records. The 1841 info on Dursely is good, I don't have anything earlier than 1851, but is there any surnames for Berkeley the town? I've just been to the site Scribes Alcove, BMD's very similar to IGI but better. & Cotswolds & Surrounds 509 census pages, but no Berkeley,.??? Maybe they are lost or too difficult to read. Anyway, the 1841 name you sent are an addition, does it have Wanswell & Halmer townships? Dear All, I wonder whether someone could ascertain more info for me on WILLIAM GILL born Stroud abt. 1807 and his wife ELIZABETH who says she is born Littleworth. These are my brick walls on my Husband's line. William & Elizabeth settled in Limehouse where he was a Master Iron Founder employing 4 men. All but their first child were born in Limehouse. The first was John born Lambeth abt. 1828. I have no births, origins or marriage for William & Elizabeth. They obviously retained connections with Stroud as two of their Sons married Sisters Selina and Hannah Gardiner from there. . Thanks in anticipation. Dene
