    3. Hi Diana, Perhaps you couldn't find Philip's birth details on www.FREEBMD.org because it is mistranscribed as MARMOND. I found Philip in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses with his family. In 1891 when you would expect him to be with his wife Alice, he is boarding in the home of the Lanbden and Walker families in Reading Berkshire. I couldn't find Alice at all. And I could fine neither of them in 1901. I did find a likely match for Alice GURR in 1881 living in Newington St Saviour with her family. Philip's family did live next door to people with a name similar to BAVES, which you will see on the census images which I will send off list. He was a schoolmaster. He married an Alice Mary Ann Gurr in 1889 at All Souls Church, All Souls Newington. Nothing is known of Alice Gurr. I am keen to know why he had Baves as a third name. Apparently the family lived at 57 Church Gardens, Chepstow and at number 5 lived Timothy and Eliza beth Beavis. Is there a connection at all? Baves could be miss spelt. Can any detective out there find out more about Philip Marmont? Can you find his birth details? Regarding Baves/Beavis perhaps there is reference to someone on his wife's side? 3. I am hoping that SKS with access to Gloucestershire parish records can help me. In my tree I have an Anna Maria Archer, daughter of Thomas Archer and Martha Hyatt (Hiatt) born 1840 in Cheltenham. I have her Birth Cert. What I would like to know is a) Did Thomas and Martha have any children before Anna Maria? (By 1842 when her sister Mary Ann was born they were living in Southampton) and b) When were they married? I have been unable to find them in any of the Censuses, anywhere. Thomas was a plasterer when Anna Maria was born and I can find a Daniel Archer, plasterer and a Joseph Archer, plasterer in Cheltenham who I think must be relatives. I am also looking for the birth around 1836 of George William Walter Edwards in Dursley. He was the son of William and Ann Edwards. Also William and Ann's marriage. Many thanks in advance Margaret

Brilliant! I will look at your censuses and see what I can make of the Beavis family next. Your help is very much appreciated. Kind regards Diana

    3. Jean, You probably know the following already. I searched the online indexes of Births, Deaths and Marriages in NSW, and I found the marriage index entry for Henry Phipps in 1828 to Elizabeth Ivory. Reg.No. Groom's Last Name Given Name(s) Bride's Last Name Given Name(s)Dist V1828845 12/1828 PHIPPS HENRY IVORY ELIZABETH CE V1828519 157/1828 PHIPPS HENRY IVORY ELIZABETH CE V18284221 3B/1828 PHIPPS HENRY IVORY ELIZABETH CE "CE" means the Church of England at Richmond, in NSW. The certificate should give details of both sets of parents. If you wished to purchase it I would give 3 of the references shown above. A search of the death indexes from 1828 to 1900 shows 3 entries. Here are the details:- Reg.No. Last Name Given Name(s) Father's Name(s,) Mother's Name(s) District 4533/1857 PHIPPS, HENRY UNKNOWN UNKNOWN TENTERFIELD 9432/1875 PHIPPS, HENRY(AGE 76 YEARS) (DIED at ENFIELD) RICHMOND 6990/1898 PHIPPS, HENRY HENRY ELIZABETH RICHMOND I'm fairly certain that the 3rd. entry is for the death of one of Henry & Elizabeth's children, not for the original Henry. The 2nd. Entry looks as if it could be the right one, considering the age at death compared to the year of death. Unfortunately, the names of his parents don't seem to have been given by whoever registered his death, which happened at Enfield, although it was registered at Richmond. These areas quite a distance apart - perhaps he had an accident, or was visiting? These are births listed in the name of Phipps for parents named Henry and Elizabeth, some of which are obviously duplicates. 2. Esther Ann
    3. Hi Listers, Just keep in mind anyone searching for an Elizabeth of any surname who had a son by the name of Frederick (Smith) born 4th,Nov.1912. She could have remarried and therefore had a different last name then what I'm aware of. The father's name on her son's birth certificate is Edgar Smith. However there is no indication of a marriage certificate, although the Frederick's Birth Certificate indicates her as Smith formally Swan. For whatever reason I can not find evidence of their existence of them being together, but my grandmother Caroline Smith and her brother Frederick were products of that union?????? Therefore, suspiciously keep in mind of any elusive ancestor a grandmother or aunt by the first name of Elizabeth, Lizzy, or Liz who had a son born in the time period mentioned by the name of Frederick (Smith) unless adopted by a new spouse could be who I seek. Thank in Advance Esther Elizabeth (Swan) Smith, (No verifiable info available.) Spouse: Edgar Smith, Born:1858/60, Gls - Died: Stroud,1948 Children: Caroline (Smith) Platt, Born: 1905, 121 Lower Westgate St., Gls - Died: 2000, Swindon,Wiltshire Frederick Smith, Born: 4th,Nov. 1912, Priory Rd. Gls, St. Nicholas. I have no way of indicating if the Elizabeth Swan's found in the census are indeed mine due to the lack of cross referencing of info. 1891: Bristol, Elizabeth Swan, Adopted niece living with Mary Fones/Jones A few years back I had made contact with an Ann Winter's and Beryl Robertson of Gloucester after putting in an inquiry in the Gloucester paper. They responded to the coincidence of having a Clement Swan, in their family line to which we have had mention that was the brother to our Elizabeth Swan. However, they had no information on an Elizabeth Swan. Ann Winter's aunt to Beryl Robertson, did remember an elderly lady when she was a child called Lizzy who lived in Perth????? That was as far as I got, since I have not been able to locate their information to date to get back to them!!!!! Elizabeth Swan, was told to have a brother named Clement Swan who actually homestead in a house inherited by his grandmother on Priory Road in Gloucester. Coincidentally our Frederick Smith was born on Priory Road. So what does the list think of the my chances????? [email protected] wrote: > > In a message dated 8/22/2008 3:43:02 A.M. 1. [GLS] BAFHS Open Day - encouraging young people to take an interest in family history
    2. Dave Napier
    3. Hi I previously sent a message to the group flagging up the BAFHS Open Day to be held at Thornbury Leisure Centre this year on 27th September. Allow me to add the following which may interest some of you ... (particularly if you have children/grandchildren around the age of say 10-13). Some time ago a member left us a legacy in his will directing that it be used to encourage young people to take an interest in family history. Two of the free sessions at the Open Day, by Julian Lea-Jones, are specially for young people (aged about 10-13). In addition at the Open Day, we will also be giving a book about family history to each young person who wants one (while stocks last!), funded by the legacy. Information at http://www.bafhs.org.uk/openday20081.htm . Regards Dave Napier [email protected] [email protected]

You probably already have FRANCES MATHEWS Christening: 10 SEP 1797 Woodchester, Gloucester, England Father: JOHN MATHEWS Family But of course there is no reason why the groom should live in the same parish so it's a probably a matter of starting in adjacent parishes and working outwards. The project currently covers 54 parishes in Gloucestershire, namely:- Abenhall, Alvington, Ashleworth, Awre, Beachley, Blaisdon, Blakeney, Bream, Bromsberrow, Bulley, Christchurch, Churcham, Cinderford St.Johns, Cinderford St.Stephens, Clearwell, Coleford, Corse, Drybrook, Dymock, English Bicknor, Flaxley, Hartpury, Hasfield, Hewelsfield, Huntley, Kempley, Lassington, Littledean, Longhope, Lydbrook, Lydney, Maisemore, Minsterworth, Mitcheldean, Newent, Newland, Newnham, Oxenhall, Parkend, Pauntley, Preston by Ledbury, Ruardean, Rudford, St. Briavels, Staunton, Staunton by Newent, Tainton, Tibberton, Tidenham, Tutshill, Upleadon, Viney Hill, Westbury & Woolaston. together with 15 Herefordshire border parishes, namely:- Aston Ingham, Bishopswood, Goodrich, Hope Mansell, Lea, Ledbury, Linton, Little Marcle, Much Marcle, Ross on Wye, Upton Bishop, Walford, Welsh Bicknor, Weston under Penyard & Whitchurch. 7 Monmouthshire border parishes, namely:- Chapel Hill, Chepstow, Dixton, Llandogo, Penalt, St. Arvans & Tintern. And 2 Worcestershire border parishes, namely: Longdon & Redmarley D'Abitot In addition to these Church of England records, all of the Gloucestershire Forest of Dean non conformist records are being added to the database, together with the non conformist records from the Herefordshire and Monmouthshire border areas. It is estimated that when the project is nearing completion in about 12 months time, the database will contain around 650,000 records. For Gloucestershire the filming of parish and non conformist registers is now complete, apart from the post-1812 registers of Ashleworth & Hasfield and 4 very early non-conformist registers, which are only available on microfilm. The only records remaining to be transcribed are 17 pre-1812 parish registers, and it is hoped that the majority of these will be added to the database before the end of September. For Monmouthshire we have been working closely with Mike John and have copied most of the available transcripts of border parishes from his website. We have discussed the possibility of adding Monmouth to the database, and I have agreed with Mike that we will help him transcribe these records as soon as they are available as digital imagery. Progress on the Herefordshire border parishes has been slower, with 28 Church of England and 9 non-conformist registers still to photograph. Hopefully we can complete the filming of these during the Autumn and complete the transcriptions by Spring 2009. When all the parish registers have been filmed we will start photographing the pre-1812 Bishops Transcripts starting in Gloucestershire. My plan is then to send out the parish registers, the BTs and the current transcripts to volunteers, so that they can be checked and updated with any additional information which is in the BTs but not the parish registers. I have been running a pilot project for Newland with one of our volunteers, this is proving to be very successful and has resulted in a number of additional entries along with numerous corrections to the original transcript. I am also planning to add some of the early 20th Century registers to the database and will be filming baptisms up to 1920, marriages up to 1940 and burials up to 1960. A quick count for Gloucestershire suggests this will add another 80 registers (i.e about 50,000 records). There are also 13 Gloucestershire registers which are still held in the churches, so I am hoping to find volunteers who will make contact with the Ministers and arrange to visit the churches to photograph these. The parishes concerned are Abenhall, Beachley, Bulley, Churcham, Corse, Flaxley, Maisemore, Minsterworth, Rudford & Tainton. It's good to hear that so many researchers are benefiting from the database, let's hope the transcribers will keep up the good work.
