Hi Ken, Yes it makes sense now - will stick to the War Graves details and certificate. Better than nothing! Thanks for your input. Regards Diana Hello Diana I hate to be a pessimist but I feel that I should warn you that you are likely to be disappointed with the death certificate when you receive it. The place of death is likely to be shown as "France & Flanders" (= The Western Front), and the cause of death is likely to simply read "On war service", or words to that effect, and even his date of death will not necessarily be accurate. The reason for all this is that a major war being fought and, with roughly, on average, about 300,000 to be recorded per annum there simply wasn't time to go into all the accurate details. Sorry! Ken.
Thanks Bob - that's great. Diana

In my tree I have an Eliza Pearce who married a John Colchester of Gloucestershire in 1827 in Chelsea London. He was from Gloucestershire, and I have always suspected that she was from Gloucestershire as well. Are you able to identify her by any chance. I guess that she would have been born in about 1806, as that was when he was born. In my researches, I have come across the following Pearce's in case they are of use to you: Thomas Pearce, a mercer, & Hester Pearce, probably his wife, alive in Gloucester 1637. A Colchester was his apprentice. There are no other people of that name since then, so I'm a little cautious about that one. The following is what I am confident it correct:- Jacob PEARCE Mar Elizabeth Johnson in Elberton, Gloucester on 15 July 1774 Parents of both parties not known.
You can also go to the CWGC sire and print out a certificate http://www.cwgc.org/ and get a photo of the site if it is a war cemetery bob ----- Original Message ----- From: "Firebird" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, September 29, 2008 8:30 AM Subject: Re: [GLS] Death Certificate for WW1 Casualties > [email protected] wrote: >> Hi all, >> >> Can anyone help me? Philip James Newman Marmont born 1884 in Sussex (his father came from Chepstow), served in the first World War and died in Rouen on the 7th November 1918 and is buried in Rouen Military Cemetery. My question is, where would his death be registered as I would like to get hold of his death certificate? Would it be in France? Or with the Commonwealth War Commission office perhaps? Regards Diana
I have just rechecked the archives. Most of the emails result from a thread I started in about February 2007 when I was looking for more information about John Beard, son of Sarah and Brice Beard. Elizabeth Jack supplied the information about John Beard's first marriage to Ann Lury which proved to be the breakthrough I was looking for. As that marriage took place in a Quaker meeting house it was well documented, including the names of his parents. I even managed to find Ann (Lury) Beard's will in the Bristol Archives in which she lamented the fact that her husband might not be able to inherit - having been shipped out to NSW for life. I am afraid my ancestor, John Beard, was a bit of a conman. Hello Lewis, She doesn't appear to be living with anyone although there seem to be 5 different households shown living in the same house at The Sterts? in English Bicknor: HO107/364/2, folio 9, page 11 Mary Cooper 70 Born in county no The main household seems to be that of a William & Hester EDWARDS and their family, followed by Thomas EDWARDS and 2 servants, then Mary COOPER, then a Jane WILBRAHAM and Ellen HARRIS and finally an Esther LERIGO. The next but one house up has a George COOPER, aged 50, Coal Miner and a William COOPER, aged 20, Coal Miner, both born in the county - any relation to your Mary?? Hi Listers Sarah Lovelace, born in about 1768, married Brice Beard at Thornbury on 7 August 1791. The approximate birth date comes from the record of the Burial of Sarah Beard on 6 March 1839 at Oldbury on Severn. I have not confirmed that this is the correct person although it seems likely given that there is other information placing the Beard family at Oldbury. Sarah and Brice were my g g g grandparents. Brice Beard died in 1834. I have been looking for information about Sarah's family and am wondering if anyone can help. I have found an Elizabeth Lovelace who was married on 22 October 1792 to John Rymer at Thornbury. She may be a sister of Sarah. I am trying to find out where they were born and the names of their parents. Scribe's Alcove has the burials of Daniel Lovelace (23 May 1792) and Jane Lovelace (13 August 1792) at Oldbury. These are possible parents but I have no real evidence that they are the parents of Sarah and/or Elizabeth. Regards Jan Daly Sydney Australia
