    1. [GLS] painswick/slad - Beavis family

    3. Hi Tony, thanks for the email. The address I have in 1881 is 1 Malvern Villas, Painswick but in 1895 it is Slad Road. It seems that Slad Road is the road from Stroud to Slad. Is this the one you have or do you know if there is another one? Thanks Mal

    1. [GLS] Painswick /Slad - Beavis family - builder - outfitter
    2. mal hale
    3. Thank you Elizabeth and Tony for your help. The details I have concern my grandmother Levia Mary (Powell) and her first husband Henry Robert Beavis who was a builder. They married in 1895 at the parish church and were living in Slad Road at the time. Henry's father William was listed as an outfitter. At this time Henry was a widow with six young children so quite a handful for young Levia who put her age at 27 although she was only 23. She soon had another three children of her own, too. In 1881 Henry was living in 1 Malvern Villas, Painswick with his first wife Jane Agnes Holton. I have not found them in 1991 when all their children would have been born. At least one of them had died by then, however. I have also been unable to find Henry's death but Levia remarried in 1915 when she was listed as widow. If anyone has anything else to add or confirm to the above I would love to hear from you. Many thanks Mal

    3. Hi Mal The book 'Bristol and Gloucester Parish Records' states that the Slad, Holy Trinity, ecclesiastical parish was formed from Painswick in 1844. So, in 1895, the marriage would have been in Slad. I don't think they would have put the Slad name in if the marriage had occurred in the Painswick church. 3. Hi Gary Where did you get this info from? According to a submission by a member of the LDS church on the Mormon site, there is the following. Robert Shepherd HANNAH ROACH Marriage: 05 MAY 1742 Olveston, Gloucester, England which is not what you have. However, this info is not from the actual baptism records but only from someone who has placed this on the LDS site. It may not be correct. You cannot rely upon this info. I cannot find any Mark Shepherd b. 1750 but it's possible if the above marriage is correct. You would have to ask if anyone has access to Olveston Parish records to find out if the marriage is correct. A request on list may come up with something. Hope this helps somewhat. 3. Hi Rita Minsterworth and Churcham are NOT on different sides of the River Severn, they are both on the north side of the river. Minsterworth is actually on the north bank of the river and Churcham is about 1 mile further north east of it. Talking to a colleague at the record office yesterday (we both undertake FH research there) she said 'The problem with the Ballinger/Ballengers is that so many of them were illegitimate!' - so be warned! The Forest of Dean website is a wonderful resource and, to a lesser extent, so is Genes Reunited but you can't beat using the actual records. Anything that has been transcribed is prone to errors and the more input from amateur family historians such as on GR, the worse it gets! Anyway, good luck with your research - I am going to be otherwise occupied for the next week as my 97 year old father is having an operation tomorrow but if I can help again for a quick lookup, let me knopw. Best wishes Liz _______________________________________________ Elizabeth Jack Hidden Heritage: www.hidden-heritage.co.uk Researching BLINKHORNE, SOSBE, GWINNETT GFHS Journal Editor -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: 02 October 2008 10:49 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GLS] Query-Ballinger`s-and Parish Records. Hi Liz,Thank you for the answer to my email.I found the Baptism Dates for the children of Benjamin & Hannah Ballinger on the Forest-of-Dean website. The only mistake I made in sending my email was that Joseph Ballinger was baptized in Minsterworth on the 15th February 1807 along with his brother Samuel and not in Churcham. The reason I am querying this family is that a few member`s on Genes Reunited have added them to my family tree by marrying this Benjamin a second time to my 3x Gt Grandmother Elizabeth Causon.I do not think this is true and am trying to prove it. 3. Hi Rita Not sure where you got your information from but I checked the Churcham and Minsterworth registers today and found the following: Churcham: 1806 Jan 26 Joseph s.o. Benjamin & Sarah Ballenger baptised 1807 Jun 14 Mary Ann d.o. Benjamin & Sarah Ballenger baptised Minsterworth: 1807 Feb 15 Joseph AND Samuel sons of Benjamin and Hannah Ballinger (of Churcham)baptised 1808 Oct 9 Joseph s.o. Benjamin and Hannah Ballinger (of Churcham) baptised I found no burial in either parish for Joseph bap 15 Feb 1807 but I found a burial in Churcham of Sarah Ballenger on May 29 1811. It looks as though there are two Benjamins. The GFHS Marriage Index has: 1802 Benjamin Ballinger married Hannah Copner at Minsterworth on 16 March The IGI has: 1794 Benjamin Ballinger married Sarah Bishop at St Mary de Lode church, Gloucester on 19th October. 3. Dianne try to find out if his Regiment is still in existence of if there is an association for it. If not in existence it would have amalgamated with another regiment. There would be some sort of museum. You could also try GRO for a copy of his military records. You would probably get more information from them than any other document. At a minimum they should be able to give his residence on enlistment, who his next of kin was. his movements from unit to unit within the Army. probably a copy of the notification telegram and maybe correspondence about any of his belongings to be returned to the next of kin. If nothing else the military was very good at keeping fairly detailed information on a servicemen - what training he did and where - if he was hospitalized etc. bob ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, September 30, 2008 9:10 PM Subject: Re: [GLS] Death Certificate for WW1 Casualties > Hi Ken, > > Yes it makes sense now - will stick to the War Graves details and > certificate. 3. Hello Diana I hate to be a pessimist but I feel that I should warn you that you are likely to be disappointed with the death certificate when you receive it. The place of death is likely to be shown as "France & Flanders" (= The Western Front), and the cause of death is likely to simply read "On war service", or words to that effect, and even his date of death will not necessarily be accurate. The reason for all this is that a major war being fought and, with roughly, on average, about 300,000 to be recorded per annum there simply wasn't time to go into all the accurate details. Sorry! Find his death in the War Dead on www.findmypast.com and order the certificate through the GRO in the normal way. It'll cost 7GBP the same as any other. Just follow the instructions but remember the reference won't be in the same format as you'll be used to for normal BMDs. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ It probably won't tell you much other than he died of injuries received whilst in the service of His Majesty or words to that effect. _____________________________________________

I am particularly interested in the marriage of a Thomas Kench and a Mary ? married about l787 probably in Coberly although all their children were born and baptized in Broadwell. Children were: Hannah, Thomas, Richard, John, Amy, Leah (our line), George, Ann and another Amy all born in that order from 1788-1806. Leah married three times: 1) to a man named Ricketts, 2) to a John Sturch b. l805 (from Whichford, Warcks) and 3) John Moss. Leah died about l876 in Whichford where she apparently lived most of her adult life. Her third husband outlived her.. Believe the original Thomas Kench was born in l765 probably in Broadwell, but unconfirmed yet. Would seem like there would be a lot of descendents from all the above children still in the U.K. Descendents of the John Sturch above emigrated to America in th e mid l800's. With thanks!
