Hello Listers, I have been following this recent flurry of Glenday activity with interest especially the mention of George, as I have one as well. My George is not as far as I can ascertain linked up with the Forfar Glendays. My George was born in 1771 and was almost certainly son of John Glendy of Arnafoul, Glamis, Angus, Scotland. This is only by deduction, as the only other George born in 1771 recorded in any surviving Scottish record appears to have died an infant as the same parents baptised another George a few years later. The first record of George in England appears to be of a marriage extracted by Pallot between George and Ann MARTIN at Christchurch, Southwark, Surrey in 1790. No further information on the marriage is available as the Marriage Registers were destroyed in WW2. HOWEVER now that Ancestry have got scanned copies of the London area Parish Registers on line, I have noted that some baptism and burial records survive. In these Registers I have spotted an entry for the baptism of Joseph son of David Glendey and Ann on 27 March 1793. David is noted as a Carpenter. Does anyone recognise this David? Could he be a brother to my George? Ann Martin had connections at Sleaford, Lincolnshire and George and Ann had children there John 1791, George 1797, Thomas 1798, Ann 1801 and Sophia 1808. They also had a daughter Mary who was born circa 1792 somewhere! I was hoping that it might be Southwark, but I can now rule this out. George was a Corn Miller and Baker in Sleaford and a lot is known about his life there. It is his life beforehand that is sketchy! Sadly he died before the 1851 census which would have told us where he was born without searching the whole of Scotland! George Glenday son of John Glendy had one known sibling John from Parish records - limited availability in Glamis - who married a Margaret Mitchell. There is however a tombstone in Glamis Churchyard to George Glenday husband of Janet Nicol who died 1763 aged 59 flanked by two later ones relating to the daughters of John Glenday and Margaret Mitchell, namely Elizabeth who married a James Suttie and Lilias who married a Samuel Mortimer. Now the mention of Gibson's below is interesting as the Will of Anne Glenday nee Martin's mother Mary Martin of Sleaford, Lincolnshire shoe died in 1813(PROB 11/1544) mentions amongst others a son in law Alexander Gibson. I have mentioned my Glamis Glenday's on here before but not for several years, so I thought it might be worth mentioning again in case any of you have taken your research further back to tie in with my Arnafoul/Glamis Glendays.
