Hi List Members, I'm still looking for parents of Julius Caesar Napoleon GLASS, b. 11 March, 1834 in Tipton Co., TN which borders the Mississippi River. JCN Glass married Lucy A. Roe in November, 1858--also in Tipton County. I am researching through a local branch of the FHC but to no avail yet. One problem is that Tipton County was not formed until 1823, and there are few records even after that until the 1830/40s. Even if someone on the list doesn't have specific information for me, maybe you know something about the migration of the GLASS family (any GLASS family) into Western Tennessee in the 18th or early 19th Centuries. Thanks for any help, Beth Glass

Hi list members, even more good old info. Message 1 This is the only information I have about my family: Julius Caesar Napoleon Glass m. Lucy A. ??? b. 11 March 1834 in Tipton County, Tennessee, USA b. 13 Jan 1843 They had several children, one of whom was my grandfather: Bishop Eric Edmon Glass (married three times prior to my Hautia Pace b. 25 July 1878 grandmother who was Bishop and Hautia had five children: Bishop E. Glass, Jr.; J. C. Glass, Wilbur Orris Glass, Dorothy Glass Turner and June Glass Ward. My father is: Wilbur Orris Glass Alvelda Townsend b. 13 September 1918 m. b. 28 February 1917 Tipton County, TN d. 3 January 1963 Dad married Ada Lee Townsend in 1967; they have no children I married Douglass Wayne Gilbert on 21 August 1960 and divorced in 1979. We had one daugher: Eliza Townsend Gilbert b. 28 February 1969 Charlotte, NC I am remarried to Harry Perrine Le Quier I have one sibling as follows: Jane Marie Glass married on 7 August 1977 Andrew A. Ruotsala b December 1946 b.?? in Vermont, USA Memphis, TN (but we lived in Tipton County) They have one daughter: Ellen Margaret Ruotsala b. 29 (I think) June 1982 This may be more information than you want, but it shows the paucity of information I have. My MOST WANTED INFORMATION is this: Parents (names, birth & date dates, location of birth and anything else possible) of my great grandfather Julius Caesar Napoleon Glass, b. 11 March 1834 in Tipton County, TN. I have not been to the county courthouse but have looked at microfilm of records of deeds and wills and can find absolutely nothing about who my great-great grandparents were. I've also put out queries on several genealogy sites. I found a Townsend cousin but no Glass relatives. Beth at bdglass@CITCOM.NET Message 2 My name is Bud Glass and I presently live in Ohio, USA. Family tradition, passed down from my grandfather, says my family originated with 3 brothers who came to USA from Scotland. Do you have any info on the following: James (John) Glass(e) Born ? Buried: 2-2-1639 in Taunton, Somerset, England Place of Birth: Taunton, Somerset, England Married Johane Dixon on 7-6-1579 in Taunton, Somerset, England Had at least 1 son, named James Glass who married Mary Cogan Any info you can give will be appreciated much more than you can possibly imagine. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you. Bud Glass at bhappy@richnet.net Message 3 My name is Mary E. Glass and I have been in contact with Mary Glass Seiley who gave me your email. My grandfathers name was Fred Burt Glass, born between 1873 and 1876 in Guernsey County, Ohio. I have narrowed this down to 1874 as a male Glass was born to Sarah A. Logan and Robert Glass. The only reason I think this one is a good possibility is that my aunt Mary Logan Glass remembers something about about her grandma being named Sarah and my aunts middle name had to be Logan because the connection was General John Alexander Logan. My grandfather died in the early 1900's and he really didn't have much to do with his children, Fred, Mary, Jack. And my father, Jack who is 83, remembers his father Fred Burt Glass very little. Mary Glass at whiteagle_48@yahoo.com Message 4 I am looking for the descendants of Jonathan S. Glass born 8-3-1817 and died 10-22-1860 in Mo. I think. He married Lucy Jane ? born 2-10-1821 and died 10-12-1877. Their children were James S. Glass born 10-27-1838; Samuel H. Glass born 11-28-1840 and William H. Glass born 1-29-1843. If anyone knows of this family please contact me. Thanks! MIKE GLASS at msglass@gulftel.com Sorry for not signing my last message. Regards Bruce.
Hi list memnbers, I hope my messages to the list are proving of some worth to someone. Here is another batch of old messages that I have that you may not know about. Message 1 I have a little New Brunswick, Canada info for you and the other members of the clan: James Glass (son of John and Mary Ellen) was born in St. Andrews, NB in 1830 (no day and month known). He died in Calais, ME in 1907. He married Mary Canavan and they had four children. (Mary is buried in Calais; but there is no record of burial for James.) The family lived for a time in St. Stephen but seemed to go back and forth (???) between there and Calais. There are many Glass births listed in the genealogy section of the St. Stephen library. I didn't copy them down when we were there because they were AFTER my great grandfather had gone to Wisconsin. Mistake on my part, I now admit. There is a John Glass buried in the old United Empire Loyalist Cemetery in St. Stephen. Death date is 29 Dec. 1853. MAY be my great great grandfather but I cannot yet confirm. Stone also says "native of Londonderry" -- which fits, too, but no confirmation. Jane Baier at MJBAIER@aol.com Message 2 Here is a list of the burials from Megantic County. Megantic County is on the south of the St. Lawrence River in the Province of Quebec, Canada, fifty miles south of Quebec City. Thetford Mines is the only city in the county, with the rest being small villages, originally settled by Irish, Scottish and Empire Loyalists. The population is now 90% french speaking. 1866/27/08 Margaret 68 years old, widow of Samuel. 1895/20/09 Martha 62 years old, wife of Edward. 1877/15/06 Samuel 64 years old. 1895/30/10 Susan 72 years old, widow of John McCanstland. 1882/20/02 Elizabeth 73 years old. 1879/15/02 Ellen (no age given) Says "Native of St-Ferdinand-d'Halfax" 1831/01/06 John 24 years old, "Native of Clogher,Tyrone County Ireland" I don't know if that will help, that's all the burials listed in the book. Cheers Patti at pmcvetty@iaw.com Message 3 I am searching for ancestors of Alexander Glas Strachan, son of Elizabeth Glas (daughter of Alexander Glas) and Joseph Strachan. Alexander Glas Strachan came to American circa 1773 from Edinburgh, Scotland. As far as I can determine, his parents did not leave Scotland. Edna Bell at BELLHQ@InfoAve.Net Message 4 MOST WANTED: Information about birth date and death date of John Glass born in Ireland and died in either Calais, Maine or St. Stephen, New Brunswick about 1853. SECOND MOST WANTED: Marriage date of John Glass (above) to Mary Ellen Unknown probably in New Brunswick but I have yet to find her. Need her maiden name so that I can start really looking for her. Hi list members, as I mentioned in my last message there is a lot of data that I have received prior to the set up of the Glass Mailing List that needs to be re-posted for the benefit of new members. Some of it may have been posted before, but better twice than not at all. Here we go ..... Message 1 I wanted to say that I have a book "The Anglo-Protestants of Megantic County" which is a repertory of births, marriages and burials in one county in Quebec, Canada from 1826-1991. There are nunerous mentions of Glass's in here and if you ever hear of anyone searching for elusive ancestors who were known/thought to be in Canada let me know and I'll look it up. Most of the people who settled in this area were of Scots/Irish origins. Our connection to the name is that my husbands g grandfather married a Mary Glass about 1855 (approx.) Cheers Patti McVetty at pmcvetty@iaw.com Message 2 I have - 12 May 1827 John son of Patrick McQuilkin & Jane GLASS of Carnaluf to Nancy Colgan of same place. Witnesses: Wm Stewart son & Wm Stewart farmer from Bushmills. Haven't been able to pin point Carnaluf but must be near Bushmills, Northern Ireland. Marcia Bush at marcia.bill.bush@clear.net.nz Message 3 I'll post a few entries from my book of births, marriages and burials of Anglo-Prostestants in Megantic County Quebec, Canada. Most of these people were of Scots, Irish or Scots/Irish extraction. They might have lived in Omagh (town), Tyrone (county) in the 1860's. Henry died in Ireland. I am not sure about wife Elizabeth (sometimes spelled Eliza). Sons, John (my Grandfather) and Henry came to Paris, Ont. about 1880. There was also a sister, Elizabeth or Lizzie. She eventually went to Alberta, Canada. I do not know her married name nor where in Alberta she went. There is also an Ohio connection. An older Aunt (by marriage to one of my Dad's brothers) seems to think he was born in and or around Paris, Ontario, Canada, and moved to Ohio. In 1891, my Grandfather John Glass, married Clara Rogerson, who had come to Paris, Ont. from England. About 1913 or 1914, they moved to Detroit, Michigan. They had 8 children, all born in and or around Paris, Ont. John (my Grandfather) died in Aug of 1927 in Roseville, Michigan, Clara (my Grandmother) died Feb 1965, also in Roseville, Michigan. Can anyone help me? I think I found a link. I found a Margaret, born in 1866 in Omagh (town), Tyrone (county), Ireland. Maybe this could be another sister as I don't know if there where any other brothers or sisters. Thank you for any help that you can give me. Hi list members, I hope everyone is researching hard and having some success. I am about to go through all of my past E-Mail messages and delete those that I no longer need. They take up valuable hard disk space. As I go through my tidy up I shall post items in the messages that may be of interest to the rest of you. I would suggest that where an item has a particular interest that you cut and paste it to your wordprocessing program for future reference. The first item describes the creation of Scots/Irish. >From a book entitled "A History of American Democracy." "The Scotch-Irish: ...These newcomers were from the north of Ireland, but most of their ancestors had been lowland Scots, some of whom had settled on lands taken from the Irish during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I, and others on Irish lands confiscated by Oliver Cromwell. As Presbyterians they could not get along well with the Catholic Irish, to whom they seemed to be mere trespasssers. As dissenters, they resented the requirement that they pay tithes to the Anglican Church. The tenant system was pecurliarly harsh upon them, since most of their landlords were absentees, who were not only unconcerned about the oppressive rentals, but were also often unaware of the still more oppressive methods of collecting them. The English government passed laws against the importation of vital Irish products, such as dairy cattle and woolen goods, and placed discouraging regulations upon the production of linen. Bad harvests and frequent famines added to Scotch-Irish discontent. "Like the Pennsylvania Germans, some Scotch-Irish colonists reached America before 1700, but the great majoriaty did not arrive until toward the middle of the next century. Some of the Scotch-Irish setttled in New England, New York and New Jersey, but most of them penetrated into the back country of Pennsylvania by way of the Susquehanna and its tributaries. Coming a little later than the Germans, the Scotch-Iriish went a little farther into the interior to find lands. They spoke English, and hence were not bothered in their relations with the native Americans by the language barrier that so often perplexed the Germans, but they were harder to deal with than the Germans. When some of them were accused of holding lands without legal title, they replied that it was "against the laws of God and Nature that so much land should be idle while so many Christians wanted it to labor on...By the time the American Revolution broke out, Pennsylvania was no less than one-third Scotch Irish." I have written to her (as mine were from Belfast) but she has not replied yet. Anyone know if she's on e-mail yet? She seems to be an enthusiastic GRD user -she's put her entries in every year for the last few years, but she's never written to me, and I've been researching since 1981! Also, has anyone made use of David McElroy's 'pre-1845 protestant marriages in Belfast' index? He compiled it himself, so charges the outragious fee of 15 pounds just to look up a name -since we don't know which church or even which religion (C of I or Presbyterian) our g-g-grandparents were married in, he's 'got us by the short and curlies' if you knbow what I mean!! Hi list members, I am slowly going through my data in a mass tidy up and today found a birth certificate for a James Robert Glass, born 31 January 1925 at Kaponga, New Zealand. Now comes the good bit, his father, Thomas Blaney Glass was born at DALRY, AYRSHIRE, SCOTLAND, about 1896. His mother, Mary Campbell was born at Campbletown, Argyleshire, Scotland about 1898. I know that one of you is researching in the Dalry area of Scotland. I have the original birth certificate for James Robert. If it is one of your ancestors I can send a copy of the certificate by snail mail. I hope this is of use to someone. Regards Bruce.
Hello list members, Thanks for all the interesting family history everyone has been posting. In case anyone might be interested, I have found three "Glass" stories that are somewhere in the public libraries. The only information I have on them is as follows: Glass Family History OCLC # 10776432 Shirley Katherine Bouchie Glass Vincenne, Indiana Glass Family History OCLC # 10967458 August Glass family history, Partly in German J.E. Glass Waterloo, Ind. Glass Family Tree OCLC # 35109999 Forrest C. Powers Glass family, Powers family and Scarborough family. Beeville, TX I got this info from sheets in our State library here in NC when I asked someone to look up the Glasse name on their computer and see if there were any genealogical stories printed about them anywhere in the US. Probably, if you contact the library administration in your area you can find out where you might be able to get a copy of these stories through interlibrary loan. (should you be interested in any of them.) Take care, Catherine

Hi list members and my appologies to Shakespeare. Regarding whether The Holiday Virus is a hoax or not. It may be but I am not prepared to play around with it to see if it is or not. Can we be sure that those saying it is a hoax have proved that it is? I treat everything that I suspect as being a Virus or containing a Virus as just that until it is proven not to be. Once your hard drive has been corrupted it is a little bit late to worry about it. I have suffered the effects of a Virus and I know what it is like to have to re-format your drive and lose everything not backed up. STOP RIGHT NOW and ask yourself if you are prepared to lose all of your data on your hard drive. We all have good intentions of backing up our data but few do it. My advice to you all is regularly back up data that you can't afford to lose and treat anything that you suspect as being a Virus as though it is until it is proven, by someone else, not to be. You are your own master and if you lose data to a Virus you can blame no one else but yourself if you haven't done a recent back-up. Another thing to consider is that in relation to Hard Drives, there is a saying among the computer fraternity that it is not a question of IF your hard drive fails but WHEN. It is a mechanical device which wears out and will fail given enough time. Once again you may lose everything on it. I have had two hard drives fail over the past 15 years, and again it is not a pleasant happening. There are three things to remember when considering hard drive data..... Back-up, Back-up, Back-up. Best regards Bruce Glass, List Owner.
