    2. Jehu is a Biblical name. It is not (in the Bible) an abbreviation of another name.

    3. To Rnzinn@aol.com I think that you will find that Jehu is a name in and of itself and is not an abbreviation. It has its own Hebrew characters and should not be confused with Jesus which is a diminutive of Joshua and not Jehu. In the Hebrew Testament, the name Jehu is given to the son of Hanani [I Kings 16:1,7,12] as well as the son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nishi, and the founder of the 5th dynasty in Israel [II Kings 9]. Your request reminds me of another name that is a name in and of itself: Eliza is not a diminutive of Elizabeth. It should be allowed to stand on its own as the writer of Uncle Tom's Cabin knew quite well. However, many people rewrite the name Eliza to Elizabeth and they should not do that. 3. Hi list members, just a couple of items I have found in my archives. 1/ From New Zealand World War 1 (1914/18) Embarkation Rolls. GLASS Thomas, Rifleman, Miner. Next of kin Mis L. Glass, Aucxen Gree, Glengarnock, Ayreshire, Scotland. If this one fits someones genealogy, more information may be able to be gained from NZ Army records. 2/ GLASS Hugh (1817-1871), speculator, squatter and merchant, was born at Porta-ferry, County Down, Ireland, son of Thomas Glass, merchant, and his wife Rachel, nee Pollock. If this man belongs to someones genealogy, I have a two page copy of his exploits in Victoria, Australia. The list now has almost 100 members and seems to be ticking over quite well at the moment. I would suggest that if you posted information some time ago that you re-post it for the benefit of the newer members. If you have lost items from early Digests please let me know the Digest Number and I can send it off to you. I am archiving all of the items posted. >From a cold, wet and windy winters afternoon in New Zealand, best of luck to you all in your research. Regards Bruce Glass, List Master.

    1. Levi Glass (The Elder)
    2. Hello all, Unfortunately, I have no new real data to provide. It appears many of us are stuck on Levi Glass (The Elder). I have been in contact (via Email) with some wonderful people from Scotland for about 1 1/2 years now and will share with you his latest message regarding the terminology "The Elder". His message reads as follows: Hi! Bud, I’ve managed to find out that the term Elder, more than likely emanates from Scotland and is a Presbyterian term, usually identifying an office bearing member of the church. Going that far back to the 1700’s it could also mean that Levi Glass had a son, or there was another person with the same name living in the same town or village, and attaching the title The Elder would distinguish between them. Sorry I can’t be of any more help, the information came from a local minister. My Grandfather whom passed away in 1958 always said our part of the Glass family (Levi) started with 3 brothers whom came to US from Scotland. Happy hunting to all. Bud Glass, Shelby, Ohio, USA.

    1. Glass, Dudley
    2. I am new to this forum but was startled to see the name Dudley Glass arise. Three weeks ago, in Scott County, KY, I spoke with Dudley Glass at his ancestral home on Long Lick Road outside of Georgetown/Stamping Ground. Dudley is descended from William Glass, son of Jehu Glass or VA (married to Elizabeth Christy abt. 1774). Jehu Glass was allegedly a sea captain who owned land in Richmond Co. VA. Jehu's wife was Elizabeth (Dozier) Belfield Wilson, twice a widow. They were married prior to 1752. At some point, Jehu sailed away and never returned. I refer you to "William Glass of Scott and Owen Counties, Kentucky", by Zelma McCord McMurtry, privately published in 1975. A copy of this may be found at the Filson Club in Louisville and by now, it may be available on film theough the LDS folks. Dudley is not your everyday name and to have it crop up in KY startled me. I am inclined to write him and see what he can tell me. In the meantime, as my attention is now turning to my Glass ancestors, I will be interested in what you all have to say. By the way, Mrs. McMurtry outlines two other Glass families living in Scott and Owen Counties and there is no known relationship to the descendants of William. I also have a copy of the book and can look up names for those interested.

    2. Beth D Glass
    3. I finally got to see a copy of the 1850 US census and found parents of my great grandfather Julius Caesar Napoleon GLASS. They are Samuel and Grizann I. GLASS. Samuel would have been born in 1812 in Tennessee--the census doesn't specify county. Grizann I. would also have been born in 1812/13 but in North Carolina. JCN was their oldest child. He was born in Tipton Co., TN in 1834 so probably Samuel and Grizann married in early 1830s. JCN's siblings and year of their birth: David L. - 1836; James K. P. - 1839; Sarah Ann - 1841; Isaac N. - 1846; Jane M. - 1848. I have also received an e-mail from someone who says the 1860 census shows Malissa J., Samuel F. B and Grisanna J. My task now is to discover more about Samuel and Grisann I. Was "I" the initial of her middle name or maiden name? Any help appreciated. Beth Glass Brevard, NC USA
