The following abstracts of tax lists in Halifax Co., VA include several GLASS families. I have been trying to determine the parents of Winny GLASS b. VA ca. 1782 who married James ARNOLD, Jr. (b. ca. 1783) in Halifax Co., VA in 1805. I have also been trying to determine the parents of Benjamin GLASS b. VA ca. 1782 who married in Henry Co., VA in 1810 to Susannah FRANKLIN. The children of these two couples intermarried in Barren Co., KY in 1836. Perhaps this information will be of use to others researching these names. You will need to view these tables using a monospaced font like Courier because the tables are "tabbed" using spaces and all the characters must be the same width (monospaced font) or the tables will look terrible. The ARNOLDs may or may not be related to BOSTICK. Susannah FRANKLIN is related to STONE, but maybe not the STONEs listed here. Going through my file and came across this info that may be of interest to some of you. It is a record of births or christenings (1802-1873) in Camus, Co Tyrone, Ireland. Bruce, Your list has been great and I print each one out and keep them on file for future reference. There still has not been a connection for me but I keep hoping. My Glas, as I have told you, goes back to Scotland and never came to America. She was Elizabeth Glas (no dates), daughter of Alexander Glas who married a lady named (unknown) Blackwood who was the daughter of Sir Robert Blackwood. Alexander Glas was the son of John Glas and Catherine Black. A son of Elizabeth Glas and her husband, Joseph Strachan, was Alexander Glas Strachan, who came to America circa 1773 and settled in Petersburg, VA where he practiced medicine. He was educated in Edinburgh, Scotland and was born 29 Jul 1748 in Luscar, Scotland. Alexander Glas Strachan married twice: (1) Lucy Pride and (2) Sarah Feild. A daughter of Alexander Glas Strachan and Sarah Feild was Ann Taylor Strachan who married John Wesley Jones of VA and NC. They had a son named Alexander Strachan Jones and the name came on down for three generations to my grandfather. There is not a lot of information here, but if any one can help me I would be most grateful. As I have told you in the past, I live in Brevard, NC and Beth Glass has told you that it is in western NC near Asheville and the Blue Ridge parkway. This is beautiful country!!!!!! And speaking a beautiful country, I enjoyed seeing the pictures of Mount Maunganui and the surrounding area. Thank you for all you are doing for us. Edna Bell
Bruce, Put a pin in Madisonville, Texas. It is close to Bryan/College Station. I45 ad Hwy 21 intersect here.
Put my pin in Southwest Iowa almost on the Missouri line-Bedford, Iowa We have not made any connections to any of the Glass families on the mailing list so far. Will keep trying--Seems like an odd name like M'Nelius would be noticed by someone! Hi list members, just keeping in touch. Today we reached a membership of 95 Glass researchers, worldwide. Are you making good use of this resource? Something to remember is that most of us ask for details on our oldest ancestor, that is only natural, but have a look further down your tree and see how many persons you have that you know nothing about as far as who they may have married. Give details (on the list) of people that you perhaps have birth/baptism details of but don't know who they may have married. Someone else may have a person with the same birth/baptism details together with marriage details and descendancy. The two people may be one and the same person. By extending your tree outwards, not only upwards, you may bring in other family that you otherwise would not have discovered. Another idea is to share Gedcom files of your "tree" with others so that they can see a broader picture of your ancestry. On the list we are only seeing small parts of each others "tree". By seeing "the big picture" you may pick up subtle connection between your "tree" and someone elses. One of these subtle connections is often middle names which can be taken from other families. eg; a person with the name Andrew Milne Glass may suggest that there is a connection with a family of the name Milne, this situation would be strengthened if several in the family shared this middle name. eg; Two brothers, Andrew Milne Glass and Robert Milne Glass. Finally, don't be stingey with information that you find. If you have just read a Census or Parish registrer film at your local LDS FHC let list members know the details of the area and time period of the information you have just collected. It may be that you have found some little piece of information that could assist someone else. This applys to all sorts of information gathered, newspaper entries, book entries, monumental inscriptions etc, etc. A posting from you to the list could be simply "I have just read the Parish Registers for Ekatahuna, NZ, for 1750-1850, anyone looking for information in this area please contact me". A genealogist that doesn't need help is a genealogist that needs the most help, a genealogist that has completed their family research is a genealogist that hasn't started. If there is anything that list members can suggest that would make the list a better place to meet please let me know. Happy hunting and best regards from Mount Maunganui on the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Bruce Glass, List Master.
Like others, I have not made a connection yet, but always enjoy reading about others. Place my pin in Nokesville, VA (35 miles southwest of Washington, DC and about 6 miles from the battleground for the 1st and 2nd Battles of Manassas or Bull Run, depending on which side of the Mason-Dixon line you might hail from. Again, for those just joining, I am looking for any information on Sarah C. Glass who married Joseph Varner in Augusta County VA circa 1850-1860. Thanks again for this connection to other Glass's. Marlyn
I must have missed the pin message, too, and Bruce has info from me before the switch to the rootsweb list. Nonetheless, add a pin at Brevard, NC, USA which is in the SW section of the state, not too far from Asheville. Beth Glass

Bruce, Stick another pin in Naperville, Illinois (30 miles SW of Chicago). Although there is at least one other GLASS searcher here, our lines do not seem to converge. I am a descendant of James GLASS, b. August 1785 in Ireland d. June 1837 in Pope County, IL, and Hannah Elizabeth BARNHILL. They lived in York District, SC before coming to IL. Their children were Jane (1785-1853), Isabelle (1787-?), Mary "Polly" (1789-1869; my ancestor, m. William CLANAHAN), David Barnhill (1790-1873), Terzah, (1794-1826), Samuel B. (1798-1866), Francis Greenberry (1799-1867), James McClenahan (1803-55), Sally (1804-?), Hugh Berry (1804-91), Robert Alexander (1807-55), and Lucinda (1810-54). I certainly would like to hear from anyone sharing this line. Jim Doody

All: I guess I missed out on the pin message, but if we are mapping the places GLASSes lived, put a pin in your map at Greenville, Hunt Co., TX. This is about 50 miles east from Dallas, TX along Interstate Hwy 20. Take a string and tie this pin to the pin Gayle Berry asked to to place in the map for Barren Co., KY as quite a few GLASSes moved from Barren Co., KY to Hunt Co., TX. It was good to see a post on this list from Gayle Berry, my distant cousin, of Glasgow, Barren Co., KY. Her message about finding a new cousin prompts this message. This weekend a note came in the mail from a Mazie Coker who lives outside of Greenville, Hunt Co., TX. She says I'm "descended from James and Nancy ____ GLASS of Barren County KY through son William Henry and Sarah Ann Baldock d/o John D. and Manirva Jane Witty d/o Ezekial and Mary (Allison) Witty"... This would be James and Nancy PERKINS GLASS. James GLASS was a son of Benjamin GLASS and his wife Susannah FRANKLIN who resided in Barren Co., KY. According to probate in Barren Co., KY, Benjamin GLASS died in 1852. I will be sending Mazie some family group sheets in the mail and I hope to learn more about her branch of the Benjamin GLASS family in the next few weeks and months.
