Hello, folks, within the next few days, RootsWeb will be changing its mail list software from "Smartlist" to "Mailman". (The software used by the Boards will also be changing but THIS notice deals with the change in List software only.) You can access a software migration schedule that will tell you when to expect this list to be migrated at: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html If you have any questions pertaining to the migration schedule, you can contact me at the admin address for this list: mailto:[INSERTLISTNAME]-admin@rootsweb.com . How will this change in maillist software affect you as a user? Not much, but there are a number of changes of which you should be aware: 1. Most importantly, the distinction between "list" mode and "digest" mode will change such that users can only access one of these two modes using a single e-mail address. If you wish to subscribe to both modes, you must do so using two different addresses. 2. As a result, the "list" mode will no longer require the "-L" for subscriptions, unsubscriptions, and to send mail to the list. You will still be able to send messages to the list using the mailto:[INSERTLISTNAME]-L@rootsweb.com address you use now OR you can choose to drop the "-L" and send your messages to mailto:[INSERTLISTNAME]@rootsweb.com . Both addresses will work after the list has been migrated. (The "-D" will still be required for all "digest" mode actions.) 3. The deletion of the "-L" for "list" mode mail means that some of you will have to do some tweaking to your mail filters, but this should not be too onerous a task. 4. Unlike Smartlist, Mailman is more restrictive in respect of subscribes and unsubscribes. To subscribe or unsubscribe, the word SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE MUST now be in the Subject line of the e-mail ... just putting it in the text will be insufficient. On the plus side, there will be a "NO MAIL" mode now! 5. There will also be changes to the way in which (a) bounces, and (b) e-mail address on the "Reject" list are handled ... for example, List Admins. now won't be notified of any bounce until the bounce threshold for the list has been met, at which time the address(es) will be automatically unsubbed. This will take me some getting used to ... Why change at all? The "why" is that Smartlist, the software that is currently used for Rootsweb's lists is not only no longer supported but is held together with generations of bailing wire and bubble gum. The choice to migrate to new software was really no longer a choice, but a necessity if we are to continue to enjoy the ease of doing genealogy via our email in boxes. Take a deep breath. Count to ten. Do not panic. The tutorial (YES, there will be a tutorial available!) is very user-friendly. The software is easy to use. It will take a wee bit of getting accustomed to and life with it will be a bit different. There is also a new list for anyone to ask questions, seek advice, etc., on the new maillist software, and has been designed for list subscribers to discuss the updates and get/give peer assistance in adjusting e-mail filters, etc.: LIST-UPDATE@rootsweb.com (NOTE: No "-L"!! ... subscribe at mailto:LIST-UPDATE-request@rootsweb.com OR at mailto:LIST-UPDATE-D-request@rootsweb.com ). There will be other matters that arise from time to time as well. As we enter this brave new world, pls contact me at the above admin address with any questions ... as usual, I'll try to assist as quickly as possible! Thanks, and continued good hunting! Peter Wyant List Admin.

Although not related to my Surname Research, I came across this amazing story on a Glanville family in Chase county Kansas. It may have circulated already, but if not, I hope it will help somenoe in their research or for historical references. I'm searching Judge Madden's family and the surnames of Harris and Hazel in Chase County, Kansas. BOMBER CRASH AT JACK GLANVILLE HOME July 19, 1944 Just before noon on July 19, 1944, the Jack Glanville home southeast of Cottonwood Falls, and the farm buildings were destroyed by fire from the crash of a 4-motored bomber, and from the resulting explosion of a butane tank used in the modern equipped home. The bomber was on a secret mission from Memphis, Tennessee. Five Army Airmen were killed and a Sergeant was severely injured as he crawled from the burning wreckage. They were from the 59th Ferry Squadron, 4th Ferry Group, of` Memphis. The plane struck the house, barn, and sheds and brought up against the silo. Mrs. Glanville who was cooking dinner, rushed from the house and was struck by part of a falling wing. Mr. Glanville and their three sons were assisting county road men, Charles Gurney and O.W. "Doc" Parks, in construction of a road to the Glanville place. Seeing it all, they rushed to the scene. Mr. Gurney reached Mrs. Glanville first and stayed with her while Glanville and Parks and the oldest son risked their lives in the exploding ammunition and flares to drive a tractor, truck, and car to safety. Nothing inside the house could be saved. Immediately authorities notified the Herington Air Base and a three place plane with three officers arrived about 1:00 p.m. After a brief inspection, the Lieutenant Colonel in charge ordered the plane on a mission, and, in taking off, it failed to rise above a fence, crashing and burning - the second plane to crash and burn there in the space of a few hours. Soon a Red Cross Ambulance arrived and the Medical officers took care of the injured. The Military took over and local people were turned back from the scene. By 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday most of the wreckage had been cleared away, much of the Army Personnel had returned to their base, but guards were still on duty Tuesday night. Mrs. Glanville was hospitatized for a short time, as was the one survivor of the bomber; the two injured in the second accident were treated locally. Monday night, Cottonwood Falls was bristling with soldiers with guns strapped to their sides and jeeps, coming and going through Main Street, and officers in cars on missions known only to the Army. This was an awful tragedy - almost equal to the crash that killed Knute Rockne and seven others a few miles southwest of there in 1931. The loss to the Glanville's was great, for insurance cannot take care of everything; but the shock to the Glanville's was awful - something that will stand out always in their memories. The above prepared from article in the CHASE COUNTY LEADER, July 21, 1944. Issued by Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Dexter (Lillian Glanville Dexter) and Evangeline Glanville. Chase County Centennial, 1872 - 1972 Chase County Submitted Historical Sketches compiled and abstracted from the Chase County Courant, Chase County Leader, other sources and newspapers by your Chase County Host, Lorna Marvin. Folks, RootsWeb's mail servers are being located overnight, Wed to Thu this week, so most of RootsWeb's services, including the HelpDesk, will be down/stopped/off-line during the relocation. RootsWeb's Message Boards <http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/script/main/rw> and World Connect <http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/> will be available as they have already been relocated. E-mail bound for RootsWeb should be held by your ISP automatically until the servers are back on-line and ready to receive e-mail again. If an e-mail does bounce back to you, please hold off re-sending it for a period of six hours. The time scheduled for the servers to be off is Thu, 19 Jan, from midnight until 6 a.m. in Utah (MST). This translates to the starting time in the USA & Canada of Thu, 2 a.m. (EST), 1 a.m. (CST), Wed, 11 p.m. (PST), etc. In the U.K., it's 7 a.m. (GMT); in NZ, 8 p.m. ; in Aus, 6 p.m. (AEDT), all on Thu. There is an associated issue ... As part of the server relocation, there is a "high possibility" that some/all of the servers will be getting new IP addresses. The potential problem is that if particular ISPs have whitelisted current RootsWeb IP addresses, the new addresses might very well be blacklisted unless/until RootsWeb can contact the relevant ISPs to allow mail through unimpeded. RootsWeb and I will be watching for this eventuality on this list ... some patience on your part might be required! Thanks ... any comments to me off-list, please ... Peter List Admin.

Surnames: Glanville, Burden, Brewer Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/mbexec/msg/5538/nBZ.2ACEB/74 Message Board Post: I am trying to work out if there is any connection between the Glanville, Burden and Brewer families. What I think I have so far is: 1841 census John and Mary Burden + children living in Dorset - some children have been born in Sussex/Hants, so they have obviously lived elsewhere Ann Glanvill - an independant widow with children including Theresa, Adolphus and Angelina, living in Portsmouth. I believe her late husband was John Karritt Glanville (d1838). she also has a son named James CORNELIUS Glanville - Cornelius is an often-repeated Burden name. 1851 census John and Mary Burden have moved to Portsmouth in a street next to Ann's 1841 address and have acquired three extra children - not new births since 1841 but older children. Their names are Theresa, Adolphus and Angelina and there ages tie up with Ann's children of 1841. They are listed as sons/daughters and have the surname Burden. Theresa is married to Robert Anderson so I tried looking for the marriage - Robert Anderson married Thirza Maria Glanville. I think Ann remarried in 1850, but it is one of those listings where there is just one name on the page, so I haven't got her husband's surname. I am working on finding these children in later census returns and it appears that they have reverted to the surname Glanville. Adolphus Burden was a painter in 1851 - so was Adolphus Glanville in 1881. Angelina married George Mussell and moved to Brighton. All these coincidences make me think that there must be some sort of relationship between the two families - maybe Ann G was John Burden's sister? Anyone any ideas? Catherine
Just a routine test, folks, to make sure the list is working correctly ... nothing to be alarmed about. Any comments to me off-list, please. Thanks & regards, Peter List Admin.
I see the registration in the birth index for 3rd quarter of 1895 - GLANVILLE Annie Elizabeth, Bethnal Green. I could not find Annie in Ancestry's index of the 1901 census unless she was recorded as born elsewhere: Annie Glanville born about 1895 at Birmingham, adopted daughter of John and Annie HERBY, living in Birmingham. Ann Glanville born about 1895 at Quebec, Durham, daughter of James and Annetta GLANVILLE living at Esh, Durham. Your Annie's birth certificate should give her parents.
