I don't know if Glanvilles were born in Abingdon, not sure yet, however,it was customary for "aristocrats" to name streets, towns in various locales after themselves. marilyn

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/nBZ.2ACEB/49.1.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Thanks Marilyn, I just didn't know about those connnections. My Aunt told me years ago that our encestor Willam de Glanville came from France to England with William the Conqueror. But when I looked through the list of key people who came with William, there wasn't a Glanville. It would be really good to tie the 18th century Abingdon Glanvilles into the various Glanville extened families identified by Jay. It could be a big job and take a fair bit of research. Interesting to hear about the Glanille streets in Abingdon. There's a Glanville Terrace in Auckland New Zealand named after my great granfather. He came to NZ in mid 19thcentury, but returned to Basingstoke in England after his store was burned down 2-3 times. His sons, ie my grandfather and great uncle, then came out to NZ 2 or 3 decades later in 1909. Cheers David

I don't buy that David re:no connections to Glanvilles in ABingdon,England. My cousin from New York went with his wife to Abingdon because he is an avid collector of MG cars which is where they are built. There are streets in Abingdon named Glanville. Furthermore,I know my granny parker knew glanvilles way back in history.I know that there is an aristocratic connection here for sure.Parkers/Glanvilles/Potters which is my genealogy goes way back to William the Conqueror.I just verified that my grandmother's sister's husband is definitely related to Sir winston Churchill. By the way,I haven't heard back from Jay yet.If you look at his website you will realize under the list of passengers on ships 13 of those names are my direct grandfather and siblings names. My grandfather which I have just verified through Jamaican research website was Lt.Colonel Samuel Glanville who owned 3 estates,6 sugar plantations. adios, marilyn

He couldn't make any connection with the Glanvilles of Abingdon. This was diappointing, especially as my aunt, who returned to live in England for a time about 35 years ago, told me about the aristocratic connections. Jay said that there were numerous Glanvilles, with a concentration in the south of England - eg Devon, Cornwall. My known Glanville ancestors did not live in those counties. There is a Glanville, enigneers, in Abingdon - I had thought of contacting them and asking them about their ancestors, but they didn't have an email at the time. I also have a son at Cambridge University and a couple of nephews in London, might ask them to see if they can find out more - but being in their 20's, they are not so interested. Sorry I can't help you out with the Parkers. Regards David
