Without an updated anti-virus program, a new HTML embedded virus, W32/[email protected], could possibly infect your computer without your knowledge just by downloading an email message, particularly if Microsoft email programs are being used. 1. [GLANTON] RootsWeb Message Boards
    2. Jim Young
    3. The RootsWeb Message Boards for GLANTON can be accessed at the following website: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=Surnames.Glanton and queries or data can be read without doing anything further. These boards still have bugs which are being addressed by programmers; therefore, don't become distraught over a feature which does not appear to work. Please contact me on any feature which does not work and I'll notify the Board Staff. The search feature may not be fully operational, yet. To post a query or data on the board, you must become an "Ancestry Registered User" which requires establishing a username and password. This Ancestry feature will pop-up when you click on "Post A New Message" while on any RootsWeb Message Board and then click on "Sign Up Now!" following the instructions. Becoming an "Ancestry Registered User" does not cost a dime... not even a nickel... it is FREE. Anyone already having an Ancestry username and password can "Login" on the same pop-up page. To save you some frustration in establishing a username, I suggest you select your surname followed by the last four digits of your telephone number which will be easy to remember. For a simple password easy to remember, I suggest you consider a pet's name or nickname followed by one or more numbers. Now, if you wish to access any of Ancestry's databases requiring an annual subscription fee, contact them and pay the required subscription fee. The same username and password, established in conjunction with the RootsWeb Message Boards, can also be used with their subscription service once they receive your money. Please contact me privately regarding any questions or problems associated with the RootsWeb Message Boards and I'll do my best to help you. Happy Huntin' Jim Young Mailto:[email protected]

    1. [GLANTON] ADMIN: RootsWeb Message Boards - FREE
    2. Jim Young
    3. RootsWeb Message Boards controlled by Ancestry.com are FREE to any user. About a year ago, Ancestry.com bought RootsWeb with the understanding that RootsWeb data would remain FREE to all users. Since Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com had similar message boards, Ancestry.com has decided to merge the two system regarding the message boards. These merged message boards will remain FREE to all users; however, to prevent internet spiders from collecting email addresses for spam purposes and maintain current users email addresses, Ancestry.com requires a username and password to access these boards. Having an Ancestry.com username and password does not mean that other Ancestry.com databases requiring a fee can be accessed. To the contrary... accessing their fee based databases requires an annual paid subscription for specific services (databases). However, the same username and password can be used to access the RootsWeb Message Boards and Ancestry's subscribed services requiring an annual fee. Happy Huntin' Jim Young

    1. [GLANTON] ADMIN: GenConnect Boards ????
    2. Jim Young
    3. The RootsWeb GenConnect Boards, as they were previously known, have been undergoing change for the past week. For the moment, they are called "RootsWeb Message Boards (insert surname, locality or topic)". These Boards are accessible by clicking on the Queries link for the old surname board. However, anyone wishing to use the changed boards now must establish an "Ancestry.com" username and password. This change-over has been frustrating to many Board Administrators and thus may cause some "Users" a great deal of frustration. Therefore, if anyone has problems with the boards, please contact me privately and I will try to provide assistance. Mailto:[email protected] At the moment, all RootsWeb Message Boards are gatewayed to each corresponding RootsWeb Mailing List meaning when a query or data is posted on the Board, it will also be posted on the List shortly thereafter. In some cases, it may not be obvious that a List message is coming from a Board post; however, a line in header within the message will indicate such. That headed is: Sender: [email protected] Hopefully, sometime in the future, programmers will include a URL link within the body to the Board post. Regards, Jim Young

    1. [GLANTON] ADMIN: Virus: W32/[email protected]
    2. Jim Young
    3. Dear Fellow Subscribers, Discussing viruses on a genealogy surname discussion list is normally "OFF-TOPIC". However, W32/[email protected] is a unique virus in that it sends itself from an infected Microsoft mail program computer using email addresses found in the "In-Box". This means that if you send a query to a RootsWeb surname list and your query is distributed to a list subscriber who uses Microsoft mail programs and whose computer is infected with the virus, the virus will respond to your message returning the virus "README.TXT.pif" and other file names as an attached file. If you receive a response to your email, DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHED FILE UNLESS YOUR ARE EXPECTING AN ATTACHED FILE. If each list subscriber does not have an antivirus program or updated their Virus definition file since about 18 April 2001, please take action immediately to either update the Virus definition file or purchase an antivirus software program. I'm not attempting to alarm anyone, only to inform. Please continue to post queries to genealogy discussion list... but be careful of any response having an attached file. The infected subscriber does not know that they have the virus or that the virus is using their computer to send the virus to every everyone that they have received a message from. If anyone on this list receives a response with an attached virus from this list as a result of posting a query on this list, please kill the virus (deleting the attached file) and forward the message to me. I will work with the subscriber in removing the virus from their infected computer. Regards, Jim Young List Admin

    3. Just for anyone who out there who is curious: A Samuel Hill bought land neighboring that of Susannah Glanton, (widow of Jonathan Glanton SR), in 1799, in Edgefield County, SC. It is my guess that this man was the father of Harriet Hill. Just a guess. Anybody know for sure?

    2. kashnik
    3. Can anybody out there tell me all about Samuel Hill Glanton JR of Louisiana? His brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles and children and children's children. Or just a little tiny bit. All the bits add up. I am trying to unravel the Louisiana Glantons and info is scarce. They don't show up on census records until long after I know they were there. (Circa 1832) What I think I know already : Samuel Hill Glanton SR was born circa 1828 to John George Glanton and Harriett Hill in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He had five siblings : Sarah Ann, born 1824; Luke S., born 1826; Thomas Lewis, born 1830; Mary P., born 1833 and John E., born 1835. John George Glanton died in an accident in 1837 when Samuel was nine only years old, the youngest son was only two. Elizabeth Sterling Glanton remarried - to a Martin Abney, who helped her raise the Glanton children. Sarah Ann married a Thomas Davidson in Troup County, GA. She later married an Isaac Windsor and died in Vienna, Louisiana. Samuel Hill Glanton married Elizabeth Sterling when she was approximately 16 years old in Jun of 1850 in Troup County, GA. Brother Luke S. also married a sixteen year old, Sarah Jane Sledge. Luke left the state and went north and died there. Sarah returned to Georgia to raise her children. Thomas Lewis Glanton married a Lucinda Kirk. Cordelia A. Glanton was born to Samuel Hill Glanton and Elizabeth Sterling in 1853 in Troup County. Sometime between 1853 and 1858 the family moved to Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. It is possible that the Abneys were already there - or other relatives. Note that sister Sarah also moved to Louisiana - in the same area. There, in 1858, William J. Glanton was born to Samuel and Elizabeth. In 1862 Samuel H. Glanton JR was born to Sam SR and Elizabeth. According to LDS records, Samuel Hill Glanton's will is dated that same year. I have no other info on this LA family. What became of Samuel Hill Glanton, JR? What became of William J. Glanton? What of Cordelia? According to LDS records, an unknown Glanton married a Lizzie Sherwood Hagerman in Webster Parish circa 1855. Webster is next to Claiborne Parish. I have no records of what happened to John E. Glanton - and can't help but wonder if he was the unknown Glanton. He would have been 20 in 1855. Well? Can anybody out there help figure out what the Sam Hill happened in Louisiana?

    3. I have found a little information on your Thomas Abner Glanton. He was a mystery man in what I call my 'puzzle box' - which is all my Glanton information - divided by decades, states and counties. In Arkansas, I had this Thomas A. Glanton and his wife, 'Selie', which I thought was Sally, misspelled. I knew he was from Georgia, yet I couldn't place him with any of my other info on Georgia Glantons. A few minutes ago I was sorting through papers on my desk to see if there was anything there I had not added to my puzzle box - and the printout of your ROOTSWEB post to me about Thomas Abner marrying Cecilia Vines was the first sheet of paper I plucked out of the pile - so I sauntered over to Heard County in 1871 and added in the birth info. I was about to scan forward to add the marriage info in Arizona in 1893 - when I realized how much Cecelia sounded like 'Selie' - so instead I went to see my mystery man. There he was, on the 1910 Arkansas census - in Nevada County! So - that was Nevada County, ARKANSAS, not Arizona. Maybe you meant Arkansas the whole time. You had the state initials as AR. I believe Arkansas is AK - though I'm not sure, myself. The two always confuse me, so I use the old ARK. 1900 - Arkansas Census - Nevada County Thomas Glanton 29 (b. Nov 1870) born GA residence : Emmet Selie (w) 25 (b. Mar 1875) GA William (s) 5 (b. Jul 1894) ARK Grady L. (s) 3 (b. Dec 1896) " Arthur L. (s) 1 (b. Mar 1899) " 1910 - Arkansas Census - Nevada County Thomas A. Glanton 39 born GA Sealy (w) 36 " Willie L. (s) 15 ARK Grady L. (s) 13 " Author L. (s) 11 " Minnie L. (d) 9 " Courtney G. (s) 7 " Thomas A. (s) 3 " Comments : I used the Soundex Cards to gather this info and left the spellings as I found them. I was amused by the initial 'L' appearing for four children in a row. I also wondered if 'Author', (Arthur), grew up to become a writer! There are a lot of Thomas A. Glantons. My main source for Glanton info in the beginning of my research - was a Thomas Abner Glanton - who lives not far from LaGrange, GA. There MUST be a relation - though I have yet to find it. By 1920 all but one child in the family had left Arkansas. I'll let you know if I find them. Which of these children is your line? 1920 - Arkansas Census - Nevada County Willie Glanton 25 born ARK Rosetta (w) 22 " Fred (s) 2y2m " Ray (s) 7m " Nobie Brooks (ML) 49 " Comments : William L. is only the one left in Arkansas, married to Rosetta Brooks. Hopefully, I will soon find out who Thomas Abner's parents were. I hope I have been of some service. Who is next? Anybody out there know who the children of Samuel Hill Glanton were - in Louisiana? How about brothers and sisters for Sam? I am hungry for Louisiana info on the Glanton family.

I'll have to do some double checking and get back to you on this - but I have Thomas ABNEY Glanton born on November 12, 1868 to Thomas Lewis Glanton and Arvelia Persons in TROUP county. Thomas Lewis had previously been married to a Lucinda Kirk, who had died, and already had children by her. You can find the family on the 1870 GA Census in Heard County, #1200, and there Thomas A. is already a year old. There was also a Thomas Abner Glanton born in TROUP County on November 28, 1863 to John Hardy Glanton and Louisiana Logan Anderson - however, this man married a Roselle Cleveland. The name Abney comes from Thomas Abney Glanton's step grandfather. His grandfather and grand mother were John George Glanton and Harriet Hill. John George 'Jack' Glanton was killed in an 'accident' involving a slave and an axe in Meriwether County, GA, in 1837. This left Harriet Hill with two boys to raise, Thomas Lewis Glanton and his younger brother, John E. Glanton. Harriet remarried to a Martin Abney and on the 1850 Georgia Census for Heard County the two boys can be found living in the home of Martin Abney. John George Glanton was the son of John Thomas Glanton JR and Priscilla Holmes and was a younger of the Charles William Glanton SR that I am looking for info on. He and his brothers and the the two boys, Thomas Lewis and John E. Glanton, were all born in Edgefield County, SC. ALWAYS - any corrections or additions to my conclusions are welcome.

    2. kashnik
    3. I subscribed to the Glanton digest some time ago, now, and the ONLY thing I have seen in my mail box was Jim Young's invitation to look at some Civil War records. Is there anybody on this list but Jim and me? If you are out there and you are interested in the Glanton family tree - Let's PLEASE get some dialogue going! I may have the info you need - you may have the info I need. I am gathering info on ALL Glantons, not just my own family. Got a question? Ask it. I may be able to help. The question itself may help us both. I am concentrating my search, at present, on trying to distinguish which of two or three William Glantons I am descended from in the mid 1800s. The number one candidate was the son of Jonathan Glanton JR and Elizabeth Weaver, grandson of Jonathan Glanton SR and Susanna Anderson. He is seen in one place as William 'Churl' Glanton. However, most other references list him as William T. Glanton. He was the brother of Dempsey Rogers Glanton and Jonathan William Glanton. Dempsey Rogers Glanton married Ann Bolger and blazed a pretty easily trackable trail from Edgefied County, SC to Upson County, GA to Meriwether County,GA to Marion County, GA to middle Alabama on to Freestone and Erath Counties in Texas. Brother Jonathan William Glanton went from Edgefield County, SC to Houston County, GA, where he married a Martha King in 1844. He died there, four years later, in 1848. If you are a Glanton in the Elberton area of Georgia, there is a good chance that you are descended from Jonathan William Glanton. The number two candidate for the William I am looking for was the son of Charles William Glanton SR and an unknown wife. Charles William Glanton SR was the oldest son of John Thomas Glanton JR and Priscilla Holmes. He had four children, all boys, and the one I am looking for was Charles William Glanton JR. The other three brothers were Benjamin, Julian and John Joel. When George William Glanton SR died in 1826, his four boys were between the ages of 4 and 12. Their mother packed them up and left the Edgefield SC area between 1826 and 1830 with wagon train of about 200, headed west to Louisiana. I have found evidence of descendents of these brothers in several different Louisiana Parishes, including Winfield, Jackson and Richland. The only fate I know, so far, of any one of these four brothers was John Joel Glanton. Anyone out there who has looked into the Glantons for any length of time has either run into John Joel - or he is just around the corner. John was an infamous desperado in south Texas and the west during the mid to late 1840's. He was a Texas Ranger who defected, killed at least one Ranger, worked for the Mexican Government during or just after the Mexican / American War as an apache scalp hunter and was killed by indians, himself, on his way to California to join the Gold Rush in late 1849 or early 1850. His exploits were part of a three part article in LIFE magazine in late July and early August of 1956. The last I know of Charles William Glanton JR was that his family went from Edgefield, SC to Louisiana, sometime between 1826 and 1830. The last rumour I have heard of his fate associated him with the Gordon County and Floyd County areas of Georgia. The last I know of William 'Churl' or William T. Glanton was the he was one the children of Jonathan Glanton JR and Elizabeth Weaver and as such he was mentioned in Jonathan JR's will and in the will of Elizabeth Weaver's mother. (In the grandmother's will he is William 'Churl'. In his father's will, he is William T.) Almost all of the ten children of Jonathan Glanton JR wound up in Upson County, GA or close to Upson County, between 1830 and 1840. My William Glanton married Mary J. Hollingsworth in Talbot County, GA in 1842. Talbot County is next to Upson County. In 1850 they were living in Upson County. In 1860, William is gone from any official records I have found, so far, but the family is still in Upson County. This makes me lean toward the William Glanton of Jonathan Glanton JR's family. However, by 1867, the family had moved from Upson County to Gordon County and at least one branch of that family went to Alabama, Louisiana and then on into Texas, which makes me lean toward the family of Charles William Glanton SR.
