Rootsweb has upgraded the software that runs RootsWeb Mailing Lists to Mailman 3.0. The interface is different than what you are used to, but it is more secure and we hope you will enjoy using it. Rootsweb removed all the existing passwords when they updated the system, but not the email addresses. Some of you may never have had a password, but you will find the system easier to use if you set one. The upgraded system has a completely different interface. If you have not re-registered your account since March 1st, you will need to re-register your account. Your old login will not work. http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/listsHelp To better understand the new system, Rootsweb recommends that you download PDF documents you will find at: http://bit.ly/RootsWebDocs Jim YoungList Admin
Hi! I think it will be interesting for you! Its quite a nice place! http://gcrp.com.au/friend_invite.php?xhotmailID=5fi2
RootsWeb programmers have placed filters on their server to discard all HTML or styled text messages. SPAM messages are usually formatted in HTML text; thus, the Rootsweb server kills all HTML messages as they are received. If anyone has recently posted a message to the mailing list and it has not been delivered, please check the settings on your email program to insure messages sent to RootsWeb are in plain text format. The following website provides assistance in formatting your email program to send "plain text" messages. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/listadmins/plaintext.html Happy Huntin' Jim Young List Admin
The new Rootsweb mailing list system (Mailman) will be going into effect over the next couple of weeks, staggered alphabetically, according to the following schedule: Thursday, August 17 - Lists A-C Monday, August 21 - Lists D-F Tuesday, August 22 - Lists G-I Wednesday, August 23 - Lists J-L Thursday, August 24 - Lists M-O Monday, August 28 - Lists P-R Tuesday, August 29 - Lists S-U Wednesday, August 30 - Lists V-Z Check this link for any changes to the timetable: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html While the "migration" of the lists to a new server should process uneventfully for listmembers, there are a few points I need to cover: 1. AOL users, please check your spam folders; and, if you find list mail held as spam, you will need to be sure to click the *THIS IS NOT SPAM* link to send the list mail to your current mailbox. This will 'train' the system to understand that mail from this new server is not spam. 2. If you are subscribed to both L & D mail modes of the list, the new system is not set up to send both to the same email address. If you want to be subscribed in both modes (many sub to both -- regular mail mode to read and delete and digest to file and save), it will be necessary to use another email address for your digest mail. It is my understanding that if you are subbed to the list in both mail modes with the same address you will be dropped from the digest list roster, so if this happens to you, please resub with another address (Yahoo is a good choice for an alternate addy). This will not effect those who sub in either of the mail modes, exclusively. 3. If you want to post from more then one account, just send me the address(es) of the extra account(s) and I will add them to the Accept List. This means you can *post* from any of those accounts but you will only *receive* the listmail from the one you originally used to subscribe. This feature is handy if you want to post from work but would prefer not to receive Rootsweb mail at your place of business. 4.In the event you receive an unsub notice, please contact me and I'll correct the problem.
The intent of this message is to inform subscribers about a recent change in RootsWeb's policy regarding messages sent to mailing lists. RootsWeb is now completely filtering out (blocking) all HTML coded email messages to reduce SPAM, the majority of it being raunchy pornographic advertisements. When posting to a RootsWeb mailing list, your message should be sent as "plain text" versus HTML, RTF (rich text format) or fancy colored text and stationary. Therefore, use only WHITE background stationary and BLACK fonts. In most instances, you can control the format by adjusting the settings in your mail program. Instructions for formatting your mail to plain text are provided on the following website: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/listadmins/plaintext.html If there are any questions regarding this issue, please consider responding through this list or contact me privately. Greetings folks! It is with a sad heart that I report the death of my grandmother, Jewel Virginia Glanton Hardy Selph. I just returned from her funeral in Florida last night. You will find her obit from the Orlando Sentinel below. I am happy to report that her death has lead to two positive events: We announce Wednesday that there will be a Glanton family reunion next year. The first one will be in Florida. We would like to have a reunion every two or three years in a different places, like Edgefield County, South Carolina, or Limestone County, Alabama. The second announcement is that we (myself and some of my cousins) are going to start building a web page about the Glanton family. Please start thinking about what you would like to put on the web page. All that I ask is that you include your sources. If the information that you have is passed down through your family, then please state it as such. Im going to be working on a biography of my grandmother, and on a list of Civil War soldiers with the last name of Glanton. Who am I? Im a professional writer and researcher that lives in the mountains of western North Carolina. Im the grandson of Jewel, the great- grandson of Claude, the great great-grandson of William H., the great great great-grandson of Dempsey, and the great great great great- grandson of Jonathan Glanton. I have many cousins in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Florida, and many other places that I would love to hear from, so please drop me a line. Regards, Michael C. Hardy PO Box 393 Crossnore, NC 28616 SELPH, JEWEL VIRGINIA HARDY, 80, Ocoee, died Feb. 21. A researcher may post a query or data related to your ancestor on a locality or special interest or even another surname message board where it may not occur to you to consider. Learning how to search ALL of the RootsWeb Message Boards at once for a particular ancestor may result in a rewarding experience. See discussion below. Anyone having a question relating to the message boards should not hesitate to ask the question and I'll provide a response. If I don't know the answer, I'll ask someone who knows the answer. Happy Searchin' Jim Young ======================= Previously published in RootsWeb Review: Vol. 6, No. 2, 8 January 2003. MAXIMIZING SEARCHES ON MESSAGE BOARDS. Click on MESSAGE BOARDS tab at the top of any RootsWeb page or go to: http://boards.rootsweb.com/ You can search all of the message boards, only a particular category, or only one specific board by selecting the appropriate button, but it depends upon your location within the Message Board hierarchy. As your teachers use to tell you: Pay attention! To perform a simple search, type in a surname (last name), a keyword, or a phrase, and click GO! In all searches, keywords or phrases will be searched for the closest to the least exact match--in that order. For a more specific search click on the ADVANCED SEARCH link. A search of all boards is the default. Complete any or all of the items on the ADVANCED SEARCH form: --FIND MESSAGES CONTAINING: (list a keyword or phrase) --WITH SUBJECT CONTAINING: (searches only message subjects) --BY AUTHOR: (the posters' names will be searched) --POSTED IN THE LAST ____: (select a time period from drop-down menu) --WITH SURNAME: (searches only the Surname Box entries) also offers a check box to use a Soundex search. (For information about Soundex, a special index, see: http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/lesson9.htm). --WITH MESSAGE TYPE: (Select from the drop-down menu: All, Query, Bible, Biography, Birth, Cemetery, Census, Death, Deed, Immigration, Lookup, Marriage, Military, Obituary, Pension, or Will). Searches on the Message Boards support wildcards represented by an asterisk * or question mark ? following a minimum of the first three letters of the keyword (search term) or surname. You cannot begin a search request surname/keyword with an asterisk or question mark (wildcard) -- you can only use a wildcard after you have started with at least three letters prior to the asterisk or question mark. An asterisk is used to denote anywhere from zero to five missing or unknown characters while the question mark is used only when you are looking for exactly one unknown character. For example: a search for joh* will find John, Johns, or Johnson. However, a search for johns?n will find Johnson or Johnsen but will not find Johnston (because there is more than one missing or unknown letters). Searching for johns*n will, however, locate Johnston in addition to Johnson and Johnsen. You can show more than one question mark to represent more than one missing letter, with each question mark shown representing an additional missing letter. For instance: rob??son will pick up Robinson or Roberson but not Robertson. Searching for rob?son will only pick up Robeson or Robison, while a search for rob*son will find Robeson, Robson, Robinson, Roberson, as well as Robertson. You can extend your wildcard searches to include more than five missing or unknown letters by using a double asterisk **. Search operators you may use are: the plus (+) sign which may be placed in front of any word to indicate that this word MUST appear in a message for it to be considered a match, and the minus sign (-) which may be placed in front of any term you wish to exclude from a search. Do not include a space between the plus or minus sign and the word or name to which it applies. A search for '+jones john -paul' will return only those hits that contain the word 'jones' -- provided the word 'paul' does not also appear in the message. The word "john" may or may not appear in the message. Messages that include both 'john' and 'jones' would rank higher in degree of match (relevancy) than those that only include 'jones'. If you search and get no matches, enter less information or search only by a surname or a keyword. Regardless of the case (upper or lower) found in the actual posts on the message boards, if you will type using all lowercase letters in the search box it will make your search case insensitive, and therefore yield the maximum number of matches. Too many matches? Enter additional data on the ADVANCED SEARCH page to narrow down your results. If the surname for which you are looking is also a common word (such as HILL) use the ADVANCED SEARCH link and search on the surname by typing it into the SURNAME BOX. This enables you to search only message board posts in which this "word" is used as a surname. Searching only on the surname field eliminates authors' names from coming up in your search results. Experiment with these various search options. You may be pleasantly surprised with the results, and start your new year off doing the "happy genie" dance.

(no day and month) 1823. Wit. Thomas When I looked at this document, I thought the name was John A. Glanton, not John H. Maybe I need to look again. The theory was put forth by Thomas Abner Glanton and Aline Segress in their research on the Glanton family that this executor was Jonathan's brother, the John Glanton who lived in Wilson County, Tennessee. My own feeling is that this John A. - or H. Glanton is the oldest son of W. Jonathan Glanton JR and Elizabeth Weaver. On the 1820 and 1820 Census for Edgefield, there are two male children in Dempsey's age bracket, Dempsey Rogers Glanton being the other executor. It seems more natural to me to assume that this is Dempsey's brother and Jonathan's son than to believe that John Glanton would handle his brother's estate from Tennessee. Maybe I am wrong, but I believe that this is the other child from the census. What became of this John Glanton who was Jonathan's executor is still a mystery to all of us. > W. Morton, Edward Settle, J.M. Lyon. Proved 21 Nov. 1825, Lemuel G. Dawson > qualified as exec. March 7, 1828, Denny R. Glanton was this day duly > qualified as an exor to the within. Recorded Book B? page 289 and 290. Even though Dempsey is most often spelled Demcy in the old records - I have yet to see a record referring to him as Denny, so I must assume this is a typo. > > Hope it helps. > Yolanda Corrections courtesy of Tom Coker, Thomas Abner Glanton, Aline Styron Segress, records on file in the Upson County Archives at Thomaston, GA and records on file in Edgefield, South Carolina. Note : Though I THINK the unknown executor is Jonathan's son, that is my opinion and not a proven fact. The rest of the stuff you can count on, John is just something to think about. Does anyone have any info on Thomas W. Morton, Edward Settle or J. M. Lyon? Quite often the witnesses turn out to be relatives or tied into the family some other way. Aline Styron Segress, who wrote 'Gleanings Concerning Some Of The Glanton Clan' in 1986, died a few years ago and her book is no longer available. Aline was descended from Jonathan through Thomas Andrew Styron and Jonathan's daughter, Nancy A. Glanton. Thomas Abner Glanton, who wrote several volumes of memoirs on his family, called 'The Glanton Treasury' and more specifically an historical volume titled 'Gleanings Along the Glanton Trail', 1982, is still going strong at age ninety one. Thomas Abner's book was originally only three copies, though one of those was mailed to Aline Segress for inclusion of certain material into her book. Thomas Abner is still rewriting, adding new information and making corrections to his manuscript to this day. Much of what you see on the net about the Glanton family - originally came from this man's twenty plus years of research, directly or indirectly. Actually, Thomas Abner does not turn ninety one for a few more weeks. If any of you want to send him a birthday greeting through me, I will be sure that he gets it, as I am overdue for a visit, anyway. Please send birthday greetings (or arguments against my theory on John) to <[email protected]>. (There STILL seems to be two JHD Glantons!)

List Subscribers, Please note that the RootsWeb Discussion Lists, RootsWeb Websites and Ancestry Message Boards will be inaccessible while their servers are being upgraded. Full details from RootsWeb Staff are provided below. I'll attempt to answer any further questions which are not answered by the HelpDesk. Happy Huntin' Jim Young ------------------- Beginning Monday, 10 June 2002, RootsWeb will begin the complex and time-consuming process of upgrading our servers to new hardware. o What does this mean for you? Well, it means some servers will be unavailable during this time unavailable and we are asking for your patience. For up-to-date information about the different resources, you can visit http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ as the move progresses. o List Administrators: When the time comes to move list servers, we will be halting operation on the machine to complete the move. We expect to have the machines down the least amount of time possible. No mail will be sent from or posted to your mailing lists. We do not expect to lose any messages. o Board Administrators: Nothing, unless your board happens to be gatewayed to a mailing list then the information for list administrators apply. o Web Pages: FTP will be down so that changes can't be made to pages until everything is working correctly on the new servers. There will be a short time that the pages will not be available as the transfer takes place. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we go through a few "growing pains." Abstracted from RootsWeb Review: Vol. 5, No. 17, 24 April 2002 KLEZ WORM WIGGLES ACROSS THE NET. No, RootsWeb.com is not sending you a virus or worm in an attachment -- no matter what these "forged" addresses with RootsWeb name in it say. Be sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date and that you use it. Never open any e-mail attachments unless you have confirmed with the sender that she or he did indeed send it to you for a reason. Do not assume that the attachment came from where it says -- these sophisticated worms are able to forge addresses and they are fooling lots of people. Some even claim to be "worm removal tools." Don't believe them. The Klez worm has been able to spread because of a security vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer (browser) and because many people do not update their browser and download these patches. Don't risk the loss of your personal and genealogical data: Update your browser now: Click: "Start", then "Windows Update" and then "PRODUCT UPDATES" Most antivirus vendors, such as Symantec, McAfee and Sophos, offer Klez patches.
