    3. Hi Dai It isn't so much a street but an area/farm - well known in its day (1800s) for the Leyson family of "the Hill". Locals seem to know it. It could be Hill Road. regards Lyn in Oz. _____ From: Dai & Angela Bevan [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, 17 August 2013 5:06 PM To: Lyn Cc: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GLA] The Hill Neath Lyn, Can you tell us where you found the name of the street? If it was from a census it should be possible to browse the neighbouring streets to try and tie it down. There is a Hillside in Neath; Hill Road in Neath Abbey; a Hill View in Jersey Marine; and a Hill Street in Melincourt / Briton Ferry. I can find no modern street named 'The Hill'. 3. In that case, Lyn, I doubt that it is Hill Road. That is a minor road leading from Neath Abbey being the Vicarage of Skewen St. John to Skewen, All part of Cadoxton St. John in the early 1800's, later Dyffryn Clydach parish. If you know where they are in the censuses in the 1800's then it should be possible to work from there. From memory, there was earlier correspondence on the list about a Leyson family of Cilfrew. 3. Just found a reference in my notes to it being a farmhouse in the lower part of Skewen alongside the road which is those years (pre 1810) was used to travel from Birchgrove to the monastery and Neath. So it does sound like Hill Road. 3. Lyn, Do you have the 1840 map of the area? Hill Road is not named, but runs from near the Hope and Anchor in Neath Abbey (the East edge of this map), crosses the railway line between Hill House and St. John's church. (Hill House is, I believe, the vicarage), passes Maes-y-Llan House and ends shortly after (at Skewen incline, known locally in my day as 'The Big Hill'). Nowadays it is known as Drummau Rd, and Streetview shows it, with the main Swansea-London railway line crossing it, as not much more than a gentle incline. I used to walk up and down that hill every day to my primary school. I should have thought of it earlier when you said 'The Hill'!
