    1. [GLA] GEENES / GEENS / GEANS / GEANES / JEENES / JEANES / JEANS
    2. A warning to anyone looking for these, the most frustrating surname I have yet come across. My relative's gt. grandmother Mary Howard, widow, remarried at George JEENES but the next time I came across her in 1901 they were GEENES living 'in the grounds' of St. Donat's Castle - I trust they were at least in a house of some kind! As I tracked them with great difficulty in the Llandow / Wick / Marcross area up to Mary's death in 1925, I found the following spellings. JEANS GEENES GEENS GEANS JEANS JEANES JEENS I had traced the HOWARDS back to st. Nicholas and St. Lythans areas with no difficulty over about 100 years, even though they moved about the place a great deal, but it was hard work finding Mary in 1911 at Llandow, and I found her by looking for her HOWARD sons. 1911 Census, Llandow Ref. RG14 3264 Schedule75, OLD COURT NEWYDD, LLANDOW Mary JEANS Head married 60 charwoman born Radnorshire David HOWARD Son Single 30 Gen. Farm Lab. born Penarth William HOWARD son Single 18 Teamster? on Farm born Ely, Cardiff N.B. Though it appears on Ancestry as JEANS, in fact Mary filled out the census form herself and signed it GEANS! So I checked for her death again on Free BMDs, and there she appears as Mary H. JEANS, died aged 80 Bridgend, Sept. Qtr. 1925, Ref. 11a751 . . . . . At her burial at Wick she appears as MARY HOWARD JEANS. George had abandoned the home [some time between 1901 and 1911] according to the family, probably leaving Mary to look out for his younger children from his first marriage as well as her own. I think this will be my lot for a while, but if anyone is interested I am happy to pass on my findings. Wendy
