First may I again say thank you to those of you who are willing to look through old newspapers or check census records or several other things for people who are not YOUR family. Thanks, Dai, for the information about the Cardiff Times and the newspaper article for Alfred Evan FORD. Now I have come across a puzzle that perhaps can be solved by those with much experience in looking for things in the past. A brother of Alfred's named John FORD who married Mary Ann BECK 14 September 1872 in Penarth St. Augustine Parish had five children, according to family records. Our family records show FLORENCE born 25 Oct. 1873 in Cardiff; WALTER JOHN born 25 Jun. 1875 in Cardiff; ELIZABETH ANN born 29 Jan. 1879 in Cardiff; another ELIZABETH ANN born 31 Oct. 1881 in Cardiff; and CLARA EMILY born 13 Nov. 1882 in Cardiff. I have found three of these children on the census records. In the 1891 census the is Florence, age 17; Walter C-F-J, age 15; and Clara E., age 8. On the 1901 cenus I found John, age 54; Mary Ann, age 49; Clara Emily, age 18; and Gertrude Mary, age 5. Someone I asked to look at the census thinks the relationship for Gertrude is granddaughter; but I can't tell for sure. Clara Emily became married to William Henry Chamberlain on 8 April 1901 in Canton Parish, probably right after the census was taken. When I was looking on the Index of Glamorgan Baptisms made by the Glamorgan Family History Society for baptismal records for their children, I found Doris, baptized 27 Feb. 1902; William Ford, baptized 25 July 1906; and Clifford Henry, baptized 18 June 1908--all in the Canton Parish while they were living either at 35 or 27 Leckwith Road. The 1911 census lists only these children--Doris, age 9; William Ford, age 5; and Clifford Henry, age 3. (The age span between Doris and William Ford might indicate another child might have been born and died.) The puzzle became apparent when I was looking at the baptism record for Doris on 27 Feb. 1902 in Canton. Right below the listing for her was a listing for Gertrude Mary, d of John and Mary Ann FORD!! That's what made me look at the 1901 census record showing John and Mary Ann. Again that seems to show her as a granddaughter; but the baptismal record gives NO indication of that kind of relationship. Furthermore, when I was trying to figure out what was going on with Gertrude Mary , I discovered a listing for another Clara Emily, baptized 1895 in Canton St. John, Glamorgan, Wales, whose parents are John and Mary Ann FORD. The parents are living at 27 Leckwith Road, which is their residence listed for the 1901 census and the baptismal record of Gertrude in 1902. I am familiar with the practice of having a child die and naming the next child of the same gender as the deceased child with the same name as the dead child. But since Clara Emily lived and in fact got married, etc., it seems like something is rather strange here. CAN ANY OF YOU HELP ME FIGURE THIS OUT? Please and Thank you. JoLynn Barneck
