    3. Hello Listers - Forgive my ignorance, but I have marriage records for two sets of gggrandparents, and I'm trying to find names of the churches in which they were married. A local researcher sent me the pages on which these marriages are recorded, but I didn't think at the time to ask for church names. One is p. 195, "Marriages solemnized in the Parish of Cadoxton W. Neath in the County of Glamorgan in the Year 1831" and Roberts Edwards and Sarah Williams "were married in this Church by Banns .......", etc. The other is p. 43. "Marriages solemnized in the Parish of Neath in the County of Glamorgan in the Year 1820" and John Davies and Mary Lovat "were married in this Church by Banns ...", etc. And while I'm at it, what does "by Banns" mean? I know you all probably find the information quite clear, but I admit I am clueless. Do I need to research what churches were in those areas in 1820 and 1831? But then, if so, how would I know which church if there were more than one in Neath and/or Cadoxton W. Neath? Yes, I'm sitting across the pond scratching my head. So - if sks would point me the right direction to find the answer, I'd sure appreciate it. Thank you. Regards, Nancy Edwards Georgia - US

    3. Banns are easy, they are announcements (three over three weeks) from the pulpit that a marriage is intended. This give anyone with an interest to declare the marriage couldn't take place. You can read more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banns_of_marriage I wait to hear about churches in Cadoxton area <G> Eliz Not Today and Not without a Fight (Anon) For all that has been, thanks. For all that will be, yes. 3. The best place to find out about any location in most parts of the UK from a family history point of view is GENUKI , a FREE web site where local people have put together information. You can navigate from the home page to Wales, then to Glamorgan, the Glamorgan Towns and Parishes to find http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Neath/ and http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/CadoxtonJuxtaNeath/ Note that 'juxta' is simply a Latin word meaning 'next to'. By exploring these pages and the links on them you can find that St Thomas's was the parish church of Neath in 1820, though from the time St David's was built in 1866 I think St David's was treated as the more important building. If you look at the link to http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~waggy/villages.html you will see that in the early 19th century Cadoxton-juxta-Neath parish stretched the whole length of the west side of the Neath valley, while the east side of the valley, going up-river, was covered by the parishes of Briton Ferry, Llantwit-juxta-Neath, Neath (which was not much larger in extent than the town centre of Neath), and Glyncorrwg. In Cadoxton, not surprisingly, the church is dedicated to St Cadoc (St Catwg in Welsh) On all the Glamorgan pages you can see a section 'Places, villages, farms etc within.... parish' with a link to a detailed map in each case. There are facsimile copies of the registers both of Neath and Cadoxton at West Glamorgan Archives. There are also images of the registers on Findmypast ( a site where you pay for access). Glamorgan Family History Society has indexed the registers. There are a number of useful links on these Genuki pages which include some early information, so there is a chance that you might get lucky.
