Llanhiddel/Llaniddel is another name for Llanhilleth . see http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MON/Llanhiddel/ If this is your family, David seems to have been from Llanfair-ar-y-bryn http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CMN/Llanfair-ar-y-Bryn/ Note that a number of records from the established church in this parish are available on FreeReg http://www.freereg.org.uk/parishes/cmn.htm They might also be on Findmypast.co.uk Mary would have been from Llangadog http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CMN/Llangadock/ which included Brynamman, which in the 1840s was showing the beginnings of industrialisation, but not nearly as much as Merthyr. If Jane married in Llanhilleth/Llanhiddel in 1866 it may be worth looking for the rest of her family in the Gwent valleys as well as in Merthyr in the 1861 census. There is a Jane Williams age 13 born Merthyr Tydfil in 1861 as a Boarder in Cefn (Cefn-Coed-y-Cymmer), Vaynor parish but effectively part of Merthyr Tydfil, in the household of David Wallters, 40, b Llandybie, Carmarthenshire and his wife Margaret, 34, b Llanfair-ar-y-bryn, Carmarthenshire. I wonder whether Margaret might have been a relative, if this is the right person. Jane was a 'scholar' so was still at school rather than having been sent out to work, fairly unusual at age 13 in 1861. Clearly the marriage certificate from 1843 will show the names and occupations of Mary's and David's parents. They might turn up in baptism records, but as they married in a Baptist chapel it is quite likely that they would not have been baptised as infants. Which Carmel was it - in Troedyrhiw or Cefn-Coed-y-Cymmer? One further comment. DAVIS is a very unusual spelling in South Wales in the 1840s. It is almost always DAVIES, and some families appear as DAVID in some censuses and DAVIES in others.
