Hi Yvonne I've just had a look at the 1891 census and there is a word in the Occupation column, just before 'Supt of Postal Telegraphs', which I can't read - can you? I think it highly unlikely that he could have done both jobs! On the other hand there was a draper's just along Queen Street run by my GGgrandfather, James Herne. Is it possible that Maggie could have worked there? I am interested because a member of his staff in 1891 was a Maggie Pergrin(probably Peregrine) who was a draper's assistant in his business. She was aged 24. It is stated she was born at Cardiff but this is probably wrong, and I believe she was born in Newport Pembrokeshire. I am helping a friend trace her. We believe she went to Cardiff because of family connections at Cardiff. Prior to this, she lived at Login near Whitland Carmarthenshire. It would be very helpful to know if Mr Charles Mattock was a draper as well as a Superintendment of Postal Telegraphs.
I've just checked the 1901 census, by which time Charles has moved round the corner into Dumfries Place There are now two more draper's assistants living in the household, one from Narberth, the other from Newport! By 1911 he has retired to Tenbury, Worcestershire and is described as 'retired post office official' - nothing about drapery there! Apologies Yvonne, for naming you Anne! One problem here is solved. The newspapers for Wales are free online Yvonne, at the National Library of Wales. Here in Weekly Mail of the 13 March 1909 is this. CARDIFF POSTAL OFFICIAL RETIRES. After long and honourable service Mr. J Charles Mattock, who has filled the important petition of first-class assistant-superintendent of telegraphs at the Bute Dock Post Office for over 40 years, has retired on a well-earned pension with the goodwill of his colleagues and, undoubtedly, the esteem of the public. Mr. Mattock came to Cardiff in 1857, being transferred from Newport after service at Abergavenny and Neath with the Electric and International Company. This was, of course, before the telegraphs were transferred to the State, and the offices of the company at that time were known as " Biddy Cafe" in Powell-place. About a dozen clerks comprised the staff, and in all three competing companies in Cardiff there were only about sixteen persons employed and few messengers. Only about 300 telegrams were handled daily by them, and the cost of a twenty words message to London Liver pool was Is. 6d. To-day over 2,000 "wires" are dealt with. In 1870 the Bute Docks Post- office was removed from a shop in Mountstuart-square to the corner of Bute-place, opposite to the present site, the larger premises being necessary to accommodate the telegraph business which was then acquiring. Mr. Mattock was then twenty-two years of age, and as the Bute Docks office was made the head telegraph office for Cardiff, it became- a very important centre. In 1898 the importance of Bute Docks Post-office as a transmitting centre for many offices in South Wales ceased, and the building in Westgate-street ceased, and the building in Westgate-street was made the central transmitting once instead, but the principal Telephone Exchange, with its large staff of operators was retained at the Docks for obvious reasons until 1905. Mr. Mattock's relations with his colleagues were indeed happy, and his urbane temperament and business like characteristics in his relationship the mercantile public at the Docks will be remembered with kindly appreciation. Source: Weekly Mail 13 March 1909 If the date of this is correct it is possible that he then became involved in this business as a Draper in Queen Street, Cardiff after his retirement and then promotion which I haven't found as have no more time. He was obviously very proud of the fact that he had been involved and was now Superintendent. He may well have been a 'sleeping partner' in this Drapery. A later year hunt may find his retirement from the position of Superintendent. Maybe look again for your lady. I did do a search for her and didn't find anything in newspapers, nor ancestry trees. Best wishes, Jill -----Original Message----- From: glamorgan-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:glamorgan-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Robert Treharne Jones via Sent: Friday, April 3, 2015 6:02 PM To: glamorgan@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GLA] Drapers Queen St Cardiff 1891 Hi Yvonne I've just had a look at the 1891 census and there is a word in the Occupation column, just before 'Supt of Postal Telegraphs', which I can't read - can you?
