    3. My gr gr uncle (whom I search because there is so little information on my gr gr grandfather), Bartholomew Shea (Bat Shae, in this census) lived at 32 Mary St in Dowlais on the 1861 census. Living at 30 Mary St were a Morgan and Margaret Rees with Jones granddaughters. There are other Jones' at 31. I have wondered who these people were but have done no more research, nor do I think they are related to me. Their son Hugh REES born c1825 was my great great grandfather. > Sarah REES aged 2 in the 1851 census as Grand-daughter was the daughter of Hugh and Martha REES. I suspect Morgan deceased as an infant. > A daughter Mary Jane REES was born c1855 as Mary Jane was recorded as aged 4 in 1860 on emigration with her family. Thorough searches by wonderful staff at Merthyr Tydfil Registry Office have failed to locate Mary Jane’s birth Certificate. Very helpful members of this list also were unable to identify a birth registration for Mary Jane REES to parents Hugh REES and Martha nee EVANS. > John REES (My great grandfather) was born at Merthyr Tydfil Workhouse 21 June 1858 (birth certificate obtained). > Hugh REES appears frequently in the Court Notices in Merthyr Tydfil newspapers for failing to provide for Martha and the children and on another occasion Hugh assaulted Martha. I located at least three occasions where Hugh was sent to Cardiff Goal for various offences. > I feel quite sure the Parish and Workhouse Authorities were quite happy to see Hugh and Martha emigrate to Nelson New Zealand and I suspect the Authorities assisted with payments of the fares in March 1860! Another 5 children were born to Martha and Hugh in New Zealand. > Thomas REES recorded as 10 in the 1841 census, 19 in the 1851 census and 29 in the 1861 census appears to also have emigrated to Nelson New Zealand in 1862. However within a month of his arrival, brothers Hugh and Thomas were again in strife with the law for assault and both spent a month in jail. After this I can find no record for Thomas. I do not know if he returned to Wales. I can not positively identify him in any census after 1861. > Lewis REES aged 26 in the 1841 census, 38 in the 1851 census , 48 in the 1861 census and 59 in the 1871 census I can not locate in the 1881 census. I did locate a Lewis REES, Barber, in Court as a Vagrant “Sleeping in the Ynysfach” and was sent to the Workhouse October 1880. I was able to locate the Merthyr Tydfil Workhouse occupants in the 1881 census but there did not appear to be a Lewis REES? I also noted that Ynysfach was 17 miles from Merthyr Tydfil so I query if it is the same Lewis REES even though both appear to be Barbers/Hairdressers? > > With appreciation for any clues as to where to look next. I will be visiting Glamorgan Archives in December and plan to check the Merthyr Tydfil Workhouse records.
