Hello all, I'm trying to date a lovely old sampler from our family. The label on the back of the frame is for Alfred FREKE, 28 Queen Street, Cardiff. I wonder if someone with access to Cardiff trade directories could check when he was working from this address (I'm aware that directories can be a few years out of date). The label doesn't mention Alfred as being a photographer, so presumably this was before he took up that trade. Many thanks, Peter For the record, the entire text on the label is as follows: ALFRED FREKE, CARVER AND GILDER, PICTURE FRAME MAKER, Printseller and Dealer in Works of Art, ARTISTS' COLORMAN, Frames Re Gilded equal to new, Engravings and Paintings Restored, 28 QUEEN STREET, CARDIFF. No. Frames of this pattern may be had by quoting the above number.
Hello, Have you tried looking for him on the historical directories website: http://specialcollections.le.ac.uk/cdm/landingpage/collection/p16445coll4 I did a search found him listed in Owen & Co.'s Cardiff Directory of 1887 as a photographer at 12 Duke Street, but there are other earlier and later directories on the site to try. Peter You may like to search for Gareth Hicks' Glamorgan Photographers database at GENUKI. It lists Alfred Freke at 28 Queen Street from 1903-1922.
