WESTERN MAIL MONDAY DECEMBER 13, 1926. No. 327. ILL-FATED FAMILY OF JEFFREYSTON-Six Members Killed In Pit Accidents. News of the death of a Pembrokeshire man in America in an unusual colliery accident has just been received. Mr. John ALLEN, a native of Jeffreyston, was manager of the Scott Colliery of the Susquehanna Colliery Company, at Kulmont, Mount Carmel. He was descending a shaft of the colliery in the cage with another man, when a sudden jar caused them both to be thrown to the floor of the cage. Mr. ALLEN struck his head against an iron bar and sustained a fractured skull, dying immediately. The ALLENS are an ill-fated family. William ALLEN, the father, met his death as the result of an accident at a small colliery at Jeffreyston:a brother of John ALLEN lost his life in the colliery at Mount Carmel:his eldest son and an uncle were killed at Merixton Bottom Colliery: and another uncle was killed at another American Colliery. GASSED IN HIS HOME? Treorky Sportsman's Tragic Fate. William JENKINS, of 62, Stuart-street, Treorky, has been found gassed at his home. He was employed as a storekeeper at the Abergorkey Colliery, and was a notable sportsman in the Upper Rhondda. He was an ex-secretary to the Treorky Rugby Football Club. He was also a member and captain of the Pentre Lawn Tennis Club, where he was very popular. YSTRADGYNLAIS CHILD KILLED. The six-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. V. L. PHILLIPS, Brecon-road, Ystradgynlais, was run over and killed on Saturday evening by a motor-car owned and driven by Mr. Edwin MORGAN, Abercrave, Valley. The child ran out from an alley and in front of the car. An inquest will be held. PONTNEWNYNDD CRIPPLE INJURED. George THOMAS (75), of Pontnewnyndd, a cripple, and former roadman at Abersychan, was admitted to the Pontypool Hospital on Saturday night suffering from severe shock after being knocked down in Snatchwood-road, Abersychan, by a motor-car driven by William Daniel HYDE, a motor mechanic in the employ of the Western Valley 'Bus Service, who was driving a party home from a football match at Talywain. BARN DISCOVERY.-Pontypool Farmer Dead Besides His Gun. William Edgar DAVIES (59), farmer, of Gaytrey House Farm, near Pontypool, was found on Saturday afternoon shot dead in a barn attached to the farm. It is stated that a piece of string was tied to the trigger of a gun, and DAVIES appeard to have discharged it with his foot. It is also stated that he was depressed at the prospect of leaving the farm in Februray next. NEWPORT LABOURER'S COLLAPSE. James CANNON, a labourer, of Llanarth-street, Newport, who collapsed while walking in Griffin-street, Newport, on Saturday died shortly after admission to Woolaston House without regaining consciousness. NEWPORT CANAL DISCOVERY. A body recovered from the Monmouthshire Canal, near Alteryn Brickworks, Newport, on Saturday evening has been identified as that of David DAVIES (56), of no fixed abode, a labourer, beleived to be formerly of Dowlais. CARDIFF BABY'S FALL. Minnie HEATH, aged six months, of Crichton-street, was being nursed when she fell out of the girl's arms. She was taken to the Cardiff Royal Infirmary with a fractured skull. On Monday morning her condition was stated to be fairly serious. BOUTS AT TONYPANDY-Kid SHEPPARD Outpoints Young Freddy WELSH. Kid SHEPPARD (Ferndale) and Young Freddy WELSH (Pontypridd) met for the fifth time at the Square Pavilion, Tonypandy, on Saturday. SHEPPARD being declared the winner after a stirring contest, in which hard blows were freely exchanged. The pace was fast and the boxing exhilarating. SHEPPARD punished WELSH with lefts and rights, but himself took some heavy body blows. Young Snowball (Clydach Vale) was handicapped in height, weight, and reach against Edfdie COOK (Cwmparc) in a six-round bout, but he fought with plenty of spirit and gained a draw. Young WILLIAMS (Dinas) was defeated by Young JOSEPH (Williamston) on points over six rounds. CONTESTS AT BRIDGEND. At the Pavilion, Bridgend, on Saturday Dick HARRY (Pontardawe) and Billy NOBLE (Kenfig Hill)-the latter substituting for Tom Dai REES (Dowlais)-met un the chief bout. The verdict was a draw. Jim OLD (Panygraig) lost to Dai PARRY (Gilfach) on points over ten rounds. Billy WATKINS (Pontyclun) defeated Johnny RUSHTON (Clydach) on points over four rounds. John Patrick.
