Having a rather unusual surname, I find it fascinating to branch way out past my own immediate line, although I do tend to want much more information on my direct line than other lines. One thing that has fascinated me is the use of my surname as a secondary forename, which has led me to be able to link other family groups to my Nixey tree. The only down side I would say is that it can sometimes work out expensive enough as it is when certificates are needed to prove something or other, so adding that expense to a famly group that isn't directly related to you will obviously increase the chances of you putting your hand in your pocket more than you would like to.
