Hi Roland, In a private response, you indicated that you thought that the Castell Coch pub was now the Lewis Arms, which is still in existence. My husband, who is familiar with the area, has checked the 1871 Tongwynlais census and found that both the Castell Coch public house and the Lewis Arms are on this census. Edward? JONES, 64, Cordwainer and Publican, was head of household at the Castell Coch, while William WHITNEY, 36, Innkeeper, was head of household at the Lewis Arms. The 1871 census indicates that the Castell Coch pub was at the northern end of Tongwynlais. My husband has found that the places near the Castell Coch pub in the 1871 census are marked on an old ordnance survey map, but the Castell Coch pub isn't shown. The Castell Coch signs on the Lewis Arms are direction signs, with arrows, pointing to the castle. Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah The Glamorganshire Canal www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

    3. Wonderful discoveries.  I was able to view the area in Google Earth and find several years' census records of the village.  Edmund Jones was the publican/innkeeper in 1871 and 1881.  My 2nd great grandfather, GEORGE NEWMAN, had left after 1891.  The place was still called Castell Coch Inn in 1901 and the innkeeper is ALBERT DYKE, living there with his family. --- On Wed, 7/13/11, Josephine Jeremiah <jojeremiah@dsl.pipex.com> wrote: From: Josephine Jeremiah <jojeremiah@dsl.pipex.com> Subject: [GLA] Castell Coch public house and Lewis Arms, Tongwynlais (was Eglwysilan) To: glamorgan@rootsweb.com Date: Wednesday, July 13, 2011, 4:51 PM On Wed, 13 Jul 2011 23:58:13 +0100, Roland Purnell <rnpurnell@yahoo.com> wrote: > Many thanks to several loyal listers who gave me some valuable advice on  > this subject.  I was able to find the pub where my ancestor lived in  > 1891.  The place formerly called "Castell Coch" is in the village of  > Tongwynlais.
