Greetings group, Recent posts concerning Eglwysilan have caught my eye. Last year I found my 2nd great grandfather, GEORGE NEWMAN, aged 64, in this village on the 1891 Census. He is the innkeeper of the Castell Coch Inn, along with his (second) wife, Louiza. (He died at Cardiff two years later. Born in Devon, he is my only ancestor whom I have discovered appearing in all six censuses during his lifetime--1841 through 1891.) I understand that Castell Coch in Welsh is "Red Castle," and that there is a famous landmark of that name nearby. This enumeration is in the civil parish of Eglwysilan. I can't find the exact location in Google Earth or Yahoo Maps. I would be delighted to learn if this pub is still in existence and its exact location. Hoping to hear from fellow-researchers. This is a great list and resource. Thanks, Roland Purnell Ventura, California
As far as I know 'The Rose and Crown' is/was the only PH in the actual village (it certainly was when I visited there many years ago in a professional capacity) As for Castell Coch, which is some distance from the village, it is located on the outskirts of Tongwynlais. Taffs Well is also nearby. Maybe the census entry referes to the parish of Egwysilan rather than the village itself. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roland Purnell" <rnpurnell@yahoo.com> To: <glamorgan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 13, 2011 1:05 AM Subject: [GLA] Eglwysilan Greetings group, Recent posts concerning Eglwysilan have caught my eye.
