Thank you to Jill and Jeff for pointing out that there is unlikely to be, and isn't in this case, any father's name on marriage entries at this time (1802). William Ellery was born in St Minver, Cornwall, at a calculated date of 1778. There is a baptism in this year of William, son of Samuel Ellery and Elizabeth [Carhart] and no other Williams baptised at around this time. There is a very helpful Online Parish Clerk for St Minver with a database of around 16,000 descendants of villagers, but another researcher has already "claimed" William, son of Samuel and Elizabeth, as an ancestor. The OPC is currently trying to backtrack over what has happened here but I thought a shortcut would be to establish the name of William's father. I now know this isn't possible. I'm very grateful to Jill and Jeff for setting me right on this. Sheila
