A verdict of "Accidental death" was recorded at an inquest at Newport on John William SELF (53), 56, Cyril-street, Newport, coal plant foreman, employed at the Newport Power Station, who was killed when struck by a grab on Tuesday. Mr. A. FOTHERINGHAM was present as H.M. Inspector of Factories: Mr. W. G. MENHENNICK (from the office of Mr. Thomas JOHN, Cardiff) represented the corporation, and Mr. H. NEWMAN, Blaenavon (National Union of Enginemen, Firemen,&c.) was for the relatives. Dr. John Francis NICHOLSON stated that the cause of death was a rupture of the heart. Henry CARDELL, Dolphin-street, Newport, crane-driver, said that early on Tuesday morning fog greatly interfered with vision. SELF apparently put out his hand to steady the grab, which appeared to strike him in the chest, and he was knocked against a wall. Stephen George JAMES, leading stoker, stated that the grab came out of the ashpit with a big swing, and its movement towards the power house wall must have been totally unexpected by SELF. John Patrick.
