    1. [GLA] Genuki - 1851 Religious Census extraction

    3. Continuing my extraction of the MON entries from the 1851 Religious Census - this entry may be of general interest. <The Forge Room, Lantarnam, Baptist Erected 1849, not used exclusively as a place of worship Attendance - morning 32 + 22 scholars, afternoon 56 scholars, evening 65 Thomas Morgan, Manager, Pudler Cwmbran Iron Works (Llanfihangel Llantarnum) I don't think I've previously noticed a entry where the chapel was apparently based within the Iron Works (or any other works) and in a building seemingly used by the latter too. Perhaps it started out as a works sponsored Sunday School for children and developed into a full blown chapel from there. Neither do I recall seeing before an informant who was obviously a member of the works management. Should this snippet give anyone a taste for more background on links between schools, religion and industry in south Wales around the mid C19th, then there is a wealth of data on Genuki's pages, as with this selection; http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Schools.html Day Schools in Glamorgan in 1847 http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/Roberts.html The Journal of William Roberts ('Nefydd'), 1853-62 http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BritishSchools.html British Schools in South Wales http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CollierySchls.html Colliery Schools in South Wales in the Nineteenth Century http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CopperSchls.html Copper-Works Schools in South Wales during the Nineteenth Century http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/VolEd.html Voluntary Education in the Industrial Areas of Wales before 1870 On a different point, I have so far seen hardly any entries in MON where Parish Church services were held in Welsh, and on one I do recall 1 service was in Welsh and the other in English. Apart from anything else I guess there were very few bilingual Church clerics around in 1851. I emphasise that I am specifically referring to MON here, but there were no doubt similarities to Glamorgan.
