RETIRED COLLIERY MANAGER-Sir William Smith Dies At Dinas Powis.    A member of one of the oldest South Wales mining families has died in the person of Mr. William SMITH, J.P., of Wernlas, Dinas Powis.   Mr. SMITH, who was 83 years of age, was the son of Mr. Samuel SMITH, general manager of the Ynyscedwin Iron Company near Swansea. He received his mining training under Mr. John SMITH, manager of Messrs. FOTHERGILLS' Works, Aberdare, and was afterwards appointed manager to Messrs. Hills Plymouth Collieries, Merthyr, subsequently becoming manager at Maesteg. In 1879 he became manager to the Bargoed section of the  Rhumney Iron Company's Collieries, finally becoming general manager of the company. He retired in 1911.    Mr. SMITH was a former chairman and member of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coalowners Association. He also served at Merthyr Board of Guardians and as chairman of the Rhymney District Council. He was a J.P. for Monmouthshire since 1893, and a commissioner for income-tax. Mr. SMITH was a churchman and was vicar's warden at Rhymney Church from 1893-1911.   A bachelor, Mr. SMITH had only one surviving brother living in America, and his only surviving near relative in this country is Mr. M. C. HARRISON, formerly engineer to the Barry Railway Company, and now divisional engineer to the Great Western Railway Company, Newport. STRUGGLE IN A SCHOOL-Newport Girls' Attemt To Seize A Cane.  Two Newport girls were summoned at the local court on Friday for refusing to depart from St. Woolos' Boys' School when requested to do so by the headmaster.  Capt. H. H. WILLIAMS prosecuted.  Mr. Joseph PRICE, the headmaster said a boy had been given a cut with the cane for arriving more than half hour late. The two girls, although not sisters of the boy, came into the schoolroom and attempted to take the cane from him. The master after a struggle with the girls secured the cane.    They were each ordered to pay 5s. FAMILY ANNOUNCEMENTS Monday December 6. 1926. IN MEMORIAM.
