http://www.freebmd.org.uk/Certificates.html is a good source for what you can expect to find on Certificates, Birth, Marriage and Death. There is a link on that page to http://www.dixons.clara.co.uk/Certificates/indexbd.htm which has a lot of chatty detail well worth looking at. It depends when the death occurred whether it is age at death that is shown, or date of birth of the deceased. 1st April 1969 seems to be the date the change occurred. The Government (GRO) has produced its own advice about researching family history including details of what is in the GRO indexes at what dates, and what is on certificates before 1st April 1969. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/Registeringlifeevents/Familyhistoryandresearch/Researchingfamilyhistory/index.htm is the direct link, or find it from the GENUKI page http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/#CivilRegistration http://www.bbc.co.uk/familyhistory/ is also a good place to start, especially if you have 'blundered into' family history in an unsystematic way (haven't we all?)
