There was an item about him in the 'Cambrian', the Swansea newspaper, in 1855 SPORTS AND RECREATION, ATHLETICS 21 December 1855 SUPERINTENDENT TATE,BERNARD KENE,MARINER ST & WILLIAM GALE THE PEDESTRIAN. And here is another one: SPORTS AND RECREATION, ATHLETICS 07 September 1855 MR GALE OF LONDON,WALKED OVER SEVEN MILES IN UNDER AN HOUR AT NEATH. If someone has access to the 'Western Mail' online via NLW there may be other items, if he was based in Cardiff. If we have the exact date of the 1880 feat in New York that may also be useful to discover other accounts which may have details of his life in Wales. Thanks Jeff, I have a ton of Gale's info but his private life (wife, etc) was never covered in the sporting pages of newspapers. Gale left Wales in 1881 (Went to the US. Died there in 1905), so a lot happened between 1855-1880 while in Wales. >From city directories and accounts, I know that in that lapse he worked as a photographer, a publican and a butcher ... While in the US he worked as a Taxidermist. Before settling in Wales, he worked as a Book Binder... (talk about random jobs!). The only mention of his wife Mary I had was from the 1861 census...
